|

It seems that I may have enough money to get a lot of needed work done on my car. One of these things is going to be the paint.
A PO before Lizard was a jackass and threw a VERY cheap white Maaco paintjob on it before he sold it. The paint wasn't even prepped before they put the current color on, so it is flaking off EVERYWHERE, exposing the factory silver color, which STILL looks better than the "new" paint.
So when I can afford this, the car is going back to its factory color.
I will tell you guys that for the most part I prefer a near-stock look. So I kinda like the black rubber strips on the vehicle, but thanks to Maaco, they did a crappy masking job and there's white paint on them in places.
I suppose that if I were to go with the 2-tone paintjob, those black strips would help with the seperation.
Opinions? Anyone have pictures to help me with the decision? _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE

Look at the picture when you sign on and you will see a white and silver car on the lower left. I think that it is tastefully done.
I chose Polar Silver paint but love the two tone. Originally mine was gray and silver. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

I suggest going back to the original color.
Also if you want another suggestion. Get rid of the strips that Macco painted over and get new ones. Only get the ones that go between the corners of the car. In other words just the strips between the wheels. Forget about the ones outboard of the wheels. Like the way they did it on the 944. Take a look at my car and you can see how it looks this way.

I'm a big fan on the silver/charcoal two-tone (top/bottom split). Get a Euro/ROW front bumper first!

If you go to the registry you will see my version which is slightly different than the previous post. I like top and bottom different colors as shown above light over darker. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Vince! you're gonna have to be more specific... what year 924 do you have? (I know you don't have a 931 becuase you weren't listed there) I don't think I have the tolerance to look thru THAT MANY entries to find yours!
Incidentally, after looking through all of the 931 entries of the registry, I'm pretty sure that I don't want to permanently take off the rubber strips. To me they look like there's something missing without them... _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE

Sorry.
Look at old registry under the 1979 year. It is about 60% down from the top so scroll down and it is after Jim Pasha and Obin Sullivan. You will see before and after pictures of my 931 1979 Euro with 170HP. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Thank you Mr. Neil. My avatar is my track car which is totally different. As I said before the water cooled cars are my favorite therefore you will never see my 911 Targa and the other water cooled car the 944. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

um , a question about the painting . I had been told that it only takes a gallon of paint to do a car ,and I had repeated it here , but recently ,I think joe and nick came up a tad short , when they painted there car . so how much paint would be neccesary , to insure good coverage , say 6-7 coats , in case some sanding is needed . |

well I can't say I'm a fan of the 2-tone jobbie you have on yours, Vince, but the Charcoal Grey under the beltline is purdy! Just personal preference, you understand
However, after seeing the euro bumpers on yours, Vince, I'm definately doing that to mine. That looks waaaaaaay sexier than the North American-spec bumpers! _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE

I only ran out because I screwed up and had to paint it a second time! 1 gallon of color and 1 gallon of clear is more than enough to do an entire car (including engine bay & everything in between). I'm not sure about single stage paints. Also, 6-7 coats is too thick, you only need 2-3.
Anyway, I vote for original silver with the door guards. I like the 2-tones, but I think they look a bit dated, IMHO.
Your doors will look like a battlefield if you leave them off for any period of time. Also, don't worry about cleaning them up from the previous paint job, just replace them. You can find the stuff through JC Whitney-type places. Don't pay Porsche the $200 or whatever they want for them!

damn you, Joe, with your yellow fetish
I've decided with all Silver, since I have to agree that the 2-tone silver/charcoal looks a little dated, but I'm going to have a look at the car after it is painted before I decide whether to put the strips back on or leave them off.
Nick: yeah, I if I do keep the strips, I'll get aftermarket ones put on, rather than ordering them from Porsche. I don't really have the $200US to throw at OEM bump strips.
The other thing I'm definitely thinking about is a CGT rear spoiler. The one that came factory is a little too subdued, IMHO, and though the 944 spoiler that I'm going to be getting soon (after the insurance is back on the car) looks better, I like the in-your-face look of the CGT one. I just wish Lizard would sell me his (he wants to keep it on his '78 924 when it takes to the track) _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE
