OK, pulled the motor last night (out of the racecar)... Still not totally nuts about how the #4 rod looks, but I'm going to pick up some plastigage and set it up w/ a new bearing, see how it measures out. My plan is to swap out the crank (it does have a bit of grooving on it, but will probably polish out) with a good spare. However I haven't pulled the head (to replace the rod), and would rather not, it's got good compression. We'll see how it measures out; if it's out of spec, the full teardown will have to happen. Or maybe I'll use another motor.
I dunno. I could also price out having the spare block dipped, bored out, and honed, so I can finally use my $800 new JE pistons. Then #77's back with a vengeance!
Oh, yeah - the rest of the drivetrain's coming out too. Probably not going to be able to make the gear fit without modification, but we're putting the 951 LSD into a 924 5-speed trans later this week/weekend, and will be switching back to the 924 torque tube to match (currently has a 944 TT and trans).
FYI, looked at the Rustang clutch that I'd had in there for the past 2 seasons. Looks beautiful. I can still see some of the lettering on the friction surface. Looks like it was in there for a weekend. Though there's a little bit of chatter marks on the pressure plate and flywheel. I'll burnish those off with some scotchbrite, then put the stock 924 clutch disc back. Maybe I should start using my clutch more often. _________________ Vaughan Scott

That's totally amazing that the clutch looks like it did. We on the other hand have been going through clutches like tissues. We think since replacing the pilot bearing that our clutch woes are over. I hope you get the car assembled asap and get out there soon. I want you to have a great running car should I decide to join you (depending on my schedule) later this september at the "Beav". I wanna make sure that you have every advantage out there with me so when I beat you there will be no excuses
Just decided to run Summit Point for the 944 Cup Hype R Fest event over the July 4th weekend.
Are you definately acid dipping your block? |

Wait, you're assuming I'll be at the Beav! Not guaranteed by any stretch, at best probably 30% likely to be there.
Not acid-dipping - dipping to clean. AKA hot-tanking it. Bath of hot solvent to clean out junk. But that would only be for a new block bored out. Not planning that just yet, have to see. _________________ Vaughan Scott
