|
|
Just a quick update on the state of my poor abused little motor...
After (experimentally) sifting through my complete stock of starters (4), I managed to find one that worked and spun the engine quickly enough to make compression. Plugged in the gauge and got numbers - 145, 150, 145, 135 psi (1-4). Not bad at all, in fact better than the last time I measured it (more even/consistent, last measured last fall). I'm pretty happy with those.
OK, so then threw some plugs in it and fired it up to see how it ran and what kinda oil pressure it was generating. Ran well enough, if cold, but was only putting out 3-4 bar cold at idle. Then again, considering I haven't changed the oil yet, and I know that the oil that was in there was cooked to 270, and probably has little to no viscosity left, it's probably not that bad!
So, obviously, I have to change the oil; however, I'm also going to pull the pan still, pull the bearing caps, and check out the condition of the bearings directly. I'm thinking at least I may put in a fresh set of rod bearings before I go out again. I also will pull the cam cover and cam bearing caps, check out the condition of those just in case.
So, got some work to do, but it's not over yet. I also have need of a massive repair of my exhaust - the downpipe is ripped 3/4 of the way around, and needs repair.
Fun fun... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Yeah, I'm not really sure how I ripped the pipe, as I'm not sure WHEN it happened - could've been when I pulled it onto the trailer at the very end of the race. Low ground clearance, maybe 5"
The oil got cooked due to running a little too far on the lean side, I think. _________________ Vaughan Scott

The questions is not "Will I get it fixed?" The question is "when will the next race be?" _________________ Vaughan Scott

Hmmm. Well, don't know when that's gonna happen - not many in my class! I seem to have better luck working over 944's... <G> _________________ Vaughan Scott

Vaughan, you don't really need to get married do you? I hope you fix it soon. Our next outing is 6/21 when were off to the great Pocono mtns or Summit Point WV. It really comes down to a coin flip. Our car is finally fixed although once we replaced the pilot bearing we were ok. I'm thinking of seriously painting our car like the Polish flag. White on top and red on the bottom. Then having custom graphics make the crest of the Polish flag. We'll see. It think we'll paint it at the end of the season.

Cool, except white is a poor colour for a racecar... a real PITA to keep clean when tracked, all the debris and oil that get flung at your hood... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Spun #4 bearing, with #1 soon to follow. Didn't bother opening the mains up, it's gonna have to come out anyway, since the rod is NFG and the crank is suspect.
Now I have to decide whether to repair an existing block, including the one that's in there, or just drop in a spare motor. Hmmmm. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Vaughan, if you have the spare motor, you should put it in. Take the time to tear down the other one and find out what else is wrong. If you need a hand, let me know - I'd come up for that.

Updated the webpage with some more pics of the spun bearing - linked at the bottom of the picture. Looks like that's the only damage - could well be OK with nothing more than a fresh set of bearings. Which are on the way from EBS Racing.
Pretty bad - Don remembered me when I placed the order, once I gave my name for the order. At least he didn't recognize my voice - yet!
Mains I looked at, and they were fine, but worn and wouldn't hurt to replace them too.
Put it this way, I'd be doing mains and rod bearings on a spare motor anyway for security, so this way, doing it with the old motor, assuming it passes inspection with plastigauge and all, I can be sure that the top end is good, and the guts are still balanced.
Looks like new bearings (at least rods, if not both) should be in order at least every other season. Now that we've established that. _________________ Vaughan Scott
