Hey, this is my first post...
Hope i'm not the only European on this forum...
OK, here goes...I'm about to buy a 1987 924S. It has about 150,000 kms (About 90K miles) on it, and is in perfect exterior and interior condition. It belongs to a buisness associate of mine.
I did a test drive, and the only problem i noticed was that when i shifted up or down to second gear, the car trembled. Is that a big deal? hope not...
Anyhow, the car is gonna cost me 5500 Euros or about 5300 Dollars...
Is that a good deal? (I am buying this car in Belgium).
It's never been crashed, and has no A/C or sunroof...
Can anyone provide me the performance figures of the 1987 924S (european model if there is any difference, as was in the first 924)
Hope i can start to contribute once i get a little more expirience, after all, this will be my first Porsche...

That price seems a bit high. I paid $4000 for mine although it's not flawless. I'm not exactly sure what the tremble is that you described. The fact that it has no A/C or sunroof is rare I believe; however, the lack of A/C especially would warrant a lower price I would think. _________________ 1988 Porsche 924S

Don't know about the "tremble"... but the performance figures quoted in the owner's manual of a US spec 87 924S is 0-60 mph in 8.3 seconds. However, Road & Track got 0-60 mph in 7.8 seconds, and Car & Driver got 0-60 in 7.5 seconds. The 1/4 mile times were about 15.8 seconds.
Unless you want to burn out (expensive) clutches and wear out transmissions, mid 7 second 0-60 times are not really these cars' strong points. Where the 924S's performance really shines (in my opinion) is the nice spread of usuable torque in the mid rpm range... which gives the car quite strong mid range accelleration... which makes it fun on the twisty back roads (the 3rd gear pick-up in these cars from about 3000 rpm and up is particularly nice).

$5300 sounds pretty steep. The blue book is from about $3500 to $5000. That is for a car with under 100K miles and in top shape with all the maintenance records. Unless you can do it yourself the belt change that is due every 45K miles will set you back another $1200 or so. The next biggie would be the clutch and motor mounts. If the belts have been changed recently and the clutch is in good shape (fairly easy to inspect) then I guess it might be ok.
I bought an 87 924S about a month ago for $1800 55K miles No sunroof but has A/C and power windows etc. A few minor parking lots dings in the paint and the drivers seat needs to be re-covered. I have put about $600 more into it in parts doing "catch-up" maintenance.
Good Luck ... they are REALLY fun cars to drive _________________ Glenn Neff
