|
|
Well I have the motor all done now with new gaskets and repainted and hanging from the lift. While it's out, I'm going to rebuild the torque tube.
After speaking with Vaughan, I thought I'd ask here as well as to any pointers on getting the torque tube out. I was wondering if there was a way to get it out without dropping the rear suspension. If I have to drop it I will be thought there may be a way to get it out another way? Also, any tips on driving out the old bearings? Sounds like this will be a pretty fun project... I have the new bearings ready to go already. _________________ Michael

There is NO way to get the tube out any other way. Bite the bullet and drop the torsion bar carrier. Trust me, BTDT. I cut a TT out of a scrapper with the carrier in place. Ended up with a gaping hole right through the whole car....
As for getting the bearings out I would put a piece of scaffolding over the center shaft and just belt them out, they are in rubber round the edges anyway. _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

Unless you remove the engine.
I just removed mine and the transaxle and the TT came out just fine without the engine in the way.
You still have to separate them before they'll come out. _________________ Stefan

Hang on are we talking 4/5 speed audi box? The TT will never come over the torsion bar carrier, it has a massive ali casting on the end, engine in or out makes no diference, and it won't come backwards as the cross member is in the way (And the back of the whole car!) The dogleg box and autio box are very different and might come out differently. _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

ok, got it all out last night. (btw, it's a 4 speed audibox)
So...more questions. I know how to pull the drive shaft from the tranny. But what's my best way to get the drive shaft out of the torque tube? I know that I'm gonna need a pipe of some sort to help push everything out. Has anyone here done all this before? Thanks for the help. _________________ Michael

I managed to knock the shaft backwards when I fitted the TT last time. I just used a piece of plywood and a hammer to knock the shaft back in. _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

ok this sucks ass. I've went thru several pieces of wood beating on the shaft to the rear and got it pretty much flush with the front flange of the TT. Should I be trying to drive the bearings out first and then slide out the drive shaft or drive the drive shaft out first and then the bearings? Is it ok to use a steel rod to drive out the shaft or should I use a pipe and drive out the bearings? _________________ Michael

There's a couple pics so far of the TT looking down thru the front end of the tube. You can see the shaft and the first bearing.

Well I got all the bearings out of the TT. NOT FUN!! After about 4 beers and lots of sweat and swear words, they were out. First of all let me tell you that there are 4 of them and not 3. AND.. if you don't use the proper size pipe to drive out the metal carriers...they get mangled.
So I have 2 of them that are fubar and 2 that are good. Now I get to try to find a couple new/used ones. This ought to be fun. As far as the pipe I used, Lowes had the perfect sized one for the job. It was in the lawn/garden area and is a post used for chain link fencing. Got a 6' piece for about $10 and it worked great. Just put a 4x4 block at the end of it and bashed the hell out of it with a sledge hammer (or as Vaughan called it..a BFH) .
So my big question now is..does anyone happen to have 2 of the metal carriers that hold the bearings? They have a rubber outside to them. I'm stuck without them...
I'll be posting a how-to about this whole process with pics here in the next couple days so that for all you guys that are thinking of rebuilding your TT, you'll have all the info on do's (and don'ts) that come with it. _________________ Michael

Here is a bearing puller that draws the carriers/bearings through the tube. Sometimes they come out easy, sometimes not.
with a tube spacer for the carriers to drop into
