FLAG* Motorsports was out at it again this past weekend racing at Summit Point Morotsports Park in the SCCA MARRS Series. Dad was in the car this weekend and I was the crew. It was raining on Friday and Saturday and the sun broke on Sunday. Saturday was eventful. On lap six of the first qualifying session, the clutch went. We immediately lost first and second gear. Upon further inspection, we learned that the clutch needed to be replaced.

We located our friend and fellow 924 ITA competitor who just happens to have a garage and race shop down the road and begged him for help. He offered to tow our car down to his shop and use his lift and tools. So we grabbed our spare clutch (ask me why we carry a spare clutch ) and completed the job in under 1.5 hours.

After we returned to the track we still felt a lot of vibrations in the drive line. We were concerned that if we ran the hardship practice and the clutch blew then we'd be up the creek w/o a paddle. My father needed this race to complete his SCCA liscense requirements.

The race came and we were gridded close to the back of the pack. We were only concerned about getting to half the distance of the overall winner - about 8 laps. I told Dad to get to the half way then drive the s*%$ out of it. We can fix it later. I was in the pits on the front straight nervously counting off the laps. When we got to 8 he saw me wave at him. He managed to turn 14 laps! We were really pleased and my father got in his requirements.

The race for us was pretty uneventful. As some of you already know the 924N/A is a mid to back of the pack car. Plain and simple. We were about 12 seconds off the class winning Honda CRX but we finished!!

My father hasn't run that track in 22 years and the last time was in an H Prod AH Sprite. My best time at my driver's school in March was 1:40 with the car running very well. He did this race, short shifiting, and only using 3rd and 4th gear and his best lap...1:40 with a sick car. I guess he is the big dog of the team after all .

If your interested in pics of our car and this weekend email me off list.

Very cool.

We gotta chase down that clutch problem of yours...

Also, we gotta get you a gear in that car, a rear end... like a 4.3 or better. I have an inquiry out to the Audi mailing list, since this is just an Audi 016 box, as there are a few Audis out there with some monster gears. I'll keep you posted. At very least we should be able to manage a 4.3. Put that in the trans spreadsheet and see how it looks to ya...

Thanks Vaughan! We may also need a 944 torque tube. My dad had it on the lift yesterday and said that the torsion tube spline was chewed up and stripped. We still think it's a bad pressure plate and the clutch forks are bent. I got a line on 2 torque tubes available. One is around the corner from me and another is in TN. Dad's gonna call me when he has something more definate to tell me. From there we'll start to shop for parts. Audi gears superior to our 1988 944S box?

Did you happend to see this months edition of GRM? There is an article in there about junk yard parts that you can use to make performance mods. Interesting that they chose to talk about the 924 in there when there are so many other cars they could have written about. Now if I can only find a '80 924 head.....

Naw, I haven't gotten my GRM yet, maybe today? I did see the cover on the website... my kinda girlz!

I'd offer a head, but all mine are trashed! I'd better throw them away before I move... I take it you're looking for a big-valve head, since you have an early one?

The Audi gears aren't stronger, so much as some Audis had shorter rear ends, like the 4.3, maybe even 4.75. Think about if your car were geared to top out at 130 instead of 160!

We have a '78 head and would be interested in upgrading maybe after the season is over. But judging by the look on my fathers face this past weekend - we may have to get it sooner!

Um, the head was updated in '77.5... yours should have the larger valves.

I found out that we had a bad pilot bearing. The pilot bearing was extremely worn out and caused us to have those clutch problems. . It is being replaced and a new pressure plate is being replaced as well. Clutch looks fine, clutch forks look fine too and the bell housing looks good too. Hopefully that is all that we need to replace. I will get you more info as I put it together.
