steering rack question

I purchase my car with the steering boot ripped. I'm getting new ones to put on.Did I lose grease? Does the rack need to be greased?

When I replaced both of my boots I took the rack apart, cleaned everything and then put a light coat of wheel bearing grease over all contact points and the teeth of the rack.
