http://vista.pca.org/cim/whatsnew_index.html

results from the first three official autocrosses. Goal was to shave time.

1st session.. I was babing the car as I was still using it as a daily driver. nearly 16 seconds behind leader.

2nd session I had the new truck in so blowing up the car wasn't a problem should it happen. running 205/60R15 street cooper cobras on the stock 6 inch spiders, very likable tire, just too greasy, no traction in start/braking or cornering. Did most the runs with the tail sliding out.
11.251 seconds behind leader.

3rd session I changed over to some 7 and 8 inch 16s running 205/50 front and 225/55 on the rear. The used tires are dry rotted and the first run actually was very wiggie until rubber started rubbing off and the car made its impression on the tires. The front tires from a 88 951 had square corners and I rounded them off pretty quickly. The car ahead of me on this session was an 87 951. and the next one up is a 911 mid to late 80's that was mildly setup for track use.

They don't list the cars. But miller is a 951; engine and suspension preped (he is PCA Prez)and bernard and jacobi are running fully setup 914s. The rest are 2.7 to 3.6 liter 911s and there may be one boxster in the group ahead of me. The runs were staged differently between the leaders and myself, I'm not saying it handicapped me but I'm sure there was a chance I could have beat the 951 and took his place
6.793 seconds behind the leader

I've got to sort out a popping upper strut problem on both sides and get some fresh tires and up the size to 225 front(maybe) and 245 rear. These last tires were hard to turn and I don't know why. I may be stuck with 205 on the front using a manual steering rack. I can turn them fine just not very fast.

My goal has been to shave off seconds and just improve my driving skills in these conditions. On the last session I exceeded my goals with successive improvements with each run. I was impressed that I closed up the gap that quickly. I know it be more difficult as I go, each fraction of a second will harder to achieve.

I'm running a stock alignment from over two years ago, Koni sports front and rear, progressive rate springs and factory sway bars. I've done nothing the engine, which is putting out enough power. I sit right between the 914 and 951 on power so I have to improve driving skills and suspension to improve.

The main thing is I'm having fun, so I might just keep what I have (minus fixing the popping) and run the rest of the sessions as is. I'll have all spring to work out mods to the car.

Good show!

I take it you're hearing a popping or clunking from one of the struts? I'd suspect the strut mount or strut itself, in that order...

Vaughn they both have been popping from day one. But for street driving I was never concerned. I'm sure the upper strut bearings are rusted beyound repair.

I've been looking at the aftermarket upper strut adjuster plates and am trying to decide if I should lay out 350 for that or just stay stock.

If it is the strut housing well I'm not sure they were installed correctly and are bangin around in the housing.

anybody tried using 968 m030 strut mounts? or have any idea what they go for? they were supposed to be stiffer that stock 968 mounts according to the sales literature. making them the stiffest out of the 924/944/968 line mounts.

are you talking about going to camber plates Zuffen? rumor is that the street life for spherical bearings is pretty short.

i replaced my mounts about 2 years ago and they pop on the a/x course already. these are with stock 924 mounts. maybe they're not made to withstand the abuse? seems like the 968 m030 mounts would be second best to camber plates.

Go with the Paragon plates, they're less expensive, and allow adjustment of caster as well. Of course, I would have to agree with concerns about longevity of the bearings on the street!!!

4th autoX... ran in the rain, a pretty good drenching rain.

Don't know the official results but is was like 78 seconds for the fastest car and I was around 82.5. I'll let you know when it gets posted.

No slides and very little lock up, almost like drving dry except for the front end pushing all over the place. Very hard track to drive as much of it was really tight. The cones were set up in the dry and just as they were getting started it began to rain so the first guys might have a better time since it was drier.

914 78.484
Boxster 79.798
924T 83.550

there are more cars but these were the top 3

I was third place, and would have been second easily if the second place guy was in my run group. I ran in the second group and he ran partially in the dry for the first group.

I sucked but did stay out of last place, next time I'll check the tire pressure. Amazing how hard to steer and slow you can be when you have 26lbs of air in the front tires when they need to be at least 32

It really comes down to a power to weight ratio. If I had eruo spec or GT spec I feel I could close up the gap. I know I need to redo my front end and tighten it up. New sticky tires instead of dry rotted old Michelin XGTs. I bet all these cars in front of me are limited slip so that would be a must have item. Of course I need to drive the car harder more to the edge and hold it there longer. First gear is way to short and I have to shift to second dropping me out of the optimum power band for some of the course. If I had 50 more HP running in second would not be an issue.

911 66.513
Boxster 66.991
944T 68.049
Boxster 68.122
944T 68.451
Boxster 70.005
924T 73.757

The rest of the pack. The 356 had several DNFs, but still it was impressive that he almost beat me a position. The two last turbo cars have very green drivers. So even though the results are impressive at first the reality is that I would be at the bottom handicapped by HP.
356 73.896
911
944T
944T
928
944

Any thoughts are welcome.

IS the 924T a good autoX car, probably not competitive as stock, but with mods I think it could easily stay near the top.

Any opinions?
