and this...

I have a '87 924S. I was wondering if anyone has tried this type of modification on there 924. Will this make any type of big improvement in headlamp output, or should i just buy a pair of PIAA bulbs, or maybe get PIAA bulbs and this mod. Are kits like these hard to put in? Ideas, comments? Are they even street legal?

Also i notice PeformanceProducts.com sells a Hella kit, Hella VISION PLUS Haologen Headlight. Is this the same thing as whats being sold on ebay?

Are these types of mods goodideas? i dont want to blind any oncoming drivers or anything, just want more lightout put so i can actually see where im going. Which would you recommend, buying of the kits or just buying a pair of PIAA Superwhite bulbs. Also are these gonna cause any electrical problems? i dont wanna burn out my battery and/or alternator just because i changed the headlights.

ok, and more more edit to this post...

I recently took off the headlight cover to check out the type of bulb used...all i can say is that it was soooo hard to take off the cover, let alone get it back on. But i decided not to unscrew anything else because of the abundance of screws everywhere. How the heck do i disassemble the headlight unit so that i can change a bulb? Im sorry, this is a pretty bad question, but its nothing like the headlights on my Ford Contor...

They are illegal in Wisconsin. BTDT.

The light is whiter, but I didn't like the coverage or the $127.50 ticket.

http://lighting.mbz.org/tech/bulbs/superwhite/superwhite.html Look there for information about the so-called "superwhite" bulbs and why they are actually _worse_ than normal bulbs because of how they contribute to tunnel-vision.

The Hella kits you are talking about are immeasureably superior to the generic knock-off kits being sold on E-Bay. Hella has been in business for years on end and is the OEM supplier of lighting units to Porsche (and most other German/European makes). The Hella kits are actually European-Spec lens replacements that use an H4-type bulb in a lens that fits into a standard sealed-beam mounting.

The Hella kits are designed from the start for actual performance, and not just perceived performance. Those kits on E-Bay _may_ make things a little better for you as the driver, but they will make things much worse for oncoming drivers because they do not properly deal with the issues of glare and dazzle for oncoming drivers.

Aaron

EDIT: You don't disassemble the "light unit" on the 944/924S. The unit is a sealed beam, and the entire "light unit" is replaced.

As far as easily available sealed-beam units, I would suggest a Sylvania "Xtra Vision" unit. The unit is legal, and no more expensive than a normal sealed beam unit, and it yields a better beam pattern than your average sealed beam. Unless the light is from a major manufacturer (Sylvania, Hella, or Osram for example), I would not use it. No, PIAA is NOT a major manufacturer. PIAA is crap lighting for riceboys.
