NA head with air injection exhaust?

Did some engines, I guess US/California engines, come with an air pump that injected air into the exhaust ports?

Searching this board results in several threads around this subject, and how to get rid of the air pump etc

Yeah, found it too. But as you said, the ports could be used for something much cooler than emission control.... if they are big enough...

Nothing even stupider like even smaller valves and ports?
They did that to the 911.
