|
|
Hello everyone. I am in the process of starting an engine rebuild for my wife's 1980 924 NA. The question I have is, what is the original color of the engine block? Is there a paint code that I cannot find?
Thanks for the help. _________________ 1980 924 N/A - White

I've been here a long time and I don't think that question has ever been asked. Its a good question
Nothing is listed in the 1980 924 Paint booklet. Same for the workshop manuals
It was some sort of flat black which makes me think its the corrosion protection lacquer that Germans like. This link should help and the use goes all the way back into the '80's. To be clear this is a best guess on my part but I have a hunch its a pretty good guess

Otherwise I used POR-15 block paint but its glossy

Unsure mine was ever painted, it's just rust on the outside everywhere. Same on my "spare" engine. |

I posted this on the 924 Owners club also and someone responded the same way...they did not think there was paint on the engine. I never even thought about that. _________________ 1980 924 N/A - White

Hmmm, thinking back we should at least be able to see if it was painted, and perhaps a bright or a dark color, simply by looking at some of the old PR materials showing at least B/w photos of the drivetrain/chassis apart from the car?
I painted mine with basic silver VHT engine paint, mainly so that I can more easily see what's going on in the engine bay while wrenching... but of course that's one racecar and one project car... _________________ Vaughan Scott

It is an interesting question nobody ever asked. Its always been "what can I paint it with"?
I have a '79 that has been in indoor storage since '91 plus a '80 931 engine also in storage since before '91. Need to check those two _________________ 1980 931 since 1989

The three examples of original engines I have, an 80 and two 81's, the blocks are black. One has only fragments of the coating left amongst the rust. |
