Took some more last night. Sorry, a lot is going on in the interior right now so its not about being clean. Still propped up underneath as I work on the hanging in the rear. Screws up top are not pulled tight either but they work perfectly. Much better than I thought. My vent panel is missing a clip too (side view). One other small winter project is to redo the top speaker gauge panel. Might do a three gauge idea I am mulling over in my brain plus AEM gauge needs a better fit

Just noticed you can see from the side view its not pulled up all the way. That day I had it on and off three times. Got tired of installing the two top screws

Great progress! I would look good with a coat of black matt plasti dip, i really like it for printed parts, makes a nice surface feel and look

Tiny side project I've wanted to do for a long while and nice holiday diversion

Printing first test piece now. With pins (cylinders) on backside!

Very nice. I have one of Dan's original plastic ones, but with no pins on the backside I've had to just slap it on top of one of the original covers.

One of these days I would love to create a mold to pump out a CF version, then seems like bonding pins to the backside shouldn't be so awful...

Thanks, I have one of Dan's glue on ones as well (2 actually...one on a car and one off) and wanted something removable. Of course I'll probably never get the one off the CS dash without destroying the dash cover. The goal is to have a three gauge version as well along with better fit for non-vdo gauges as needed.

Its printing now in CF petg but I had two crashes so far. Slowed it down a bit so hopefully I'll have a test piece by tomorrow. This one is also small enough that once I get a decent design, I'll print in SLS

Something like this could be carbon wrapped too. Maybe not this one unless I made a two piece press mold. That is possible

First proto print still with support residue almost ready for test fit. I am already tweaking the CAD for next test print with what I learned here. Also not near a car or gauges today to test

I really like this. I'm torn between practicality and symetry..so i dont know weather i'd prefer to have the two gauges aligned with the car or angled but your design looks awesome.

Didn't get an email saying you responded, thank you

Its hard really and I totally agree. It started because I wanted to see if I could make a three gauge pod. Then it just evolved

What is odd is how practical it is for the driver while being almost weird when you look in the car since its also at a down angle which I didn't really comprehend until I tried it. Sitting in the driver seat though its really easy and nice to view. So far I have received only "wow, that's cool" reviews in person so maybe its the right idea

The test fit had issues. Pins are perfect! ...but need a slight reduction in diameter. The back side cut out needs help and I am fixing the CAD now. A few other things need tweaking so there might be two more test printed needed. I couldn't push it all the way in just yet.

In my original 80 931 which has been stored forever! Included my 18 year old steering wrap. Wish it looked better but love the thickness. Another project for another day

One thing you've maybe already considered/addressed, but I've fought with Dan's design, is that the clearance on the backside for the tail end of the gauges is problematic... they interfered a bit with the speaker area in the dash... not such a big deal when you have a blown out old cardboard dash, but more of a pain now with the new plastic dash... so definitely want to be sure you've brought the gauges far "forward" enough (towards the driver) that they'll fit in the housing...

Sorta thinking I might want to upgrade to your design, if you're looking to sell some...

Thanks! ...and I would sell some for sure after getting it right. Plus I'll do a right and left hand.

I'll keep all that in mind since the dash I am using is not damaged. The next print will tell me for sure and then I might have to come out a few mm

I also want to give everyone the option for aftermarket - Non VDO - gauges

Scroll up to the pic of the CS dash and the issue with AEM AFR gauge

Oh yeah, good point; I use an Innovate AFR, and I think it has a similar bezel and issue...

I tried a Innovate AFR / Boost / Controller destined for the '82. It doesn't go all the way into the second stepped bore and sits on top instead but still under the pod lip which has it looking normal. Obviously an easy adjustment to get it deeper once everything is ironed out

Second attempted print fit better but revealed any issue which I am trying to figure out since CAD model is straight off the scan. The dash curve doesn't match up which is really weird. Pins fit perfectly (little loose on purpose right now) but I suspect there is still something either in the curve of behind the panel that isn't right like a fillet or two?

I liked how the underside looked since it matches the underside of the original.

Going to model just the speaker panel / pins and print with a big square hole in the middle so I can see exactly what is going on. The idea here is to make this nice not ill-fitting

Also to your point Vaughn, I can adjust the gauge outward distance and the Innovate gauge test proved you could do something even in the existing holes (shim) and it still looks decent. The gauge closer to the passenger sits farther out naturally as well

This is what I am talking about. Even though print design is straight from scan, fit is odd at the dash radius. I am on my second test piece with no gauge pod and huge open window so I can stick my phone in there to see what it looks like

First try below in pic without adjustments. You can see the gap between panel and dash. Second printed overnight. Time to go see how it looks
