Engine started overheating last week while belts started squealing. Figured it just needed a new belt and decided to put a new water pump on while I was at it.

Thought it fixed the problem but after driving it for a little bit it would start steaming from the back of the engine (next to firewall) at idle. Put a new thermostat in and started the burping process. Steam started to shoot out of the bleed hole and soon after out of the coolant tank and back of the engine again.

I’m fairly new to fixing cars so is there something obvious I’m missing? I’ve read some other forum posts with similar issues with possible clogs but it gets hot through the entire system.

ANY advice is welcome.

Well, there's of course always the risk of a blown headgasket, that makes for quick overheating... but it shouldn't piss coolant externally, not usually how they fail.

Thermostat, water pump and belt aren't a bad start... but there's a LOT of coolant plumbing at the back by the firewall. Have you inspected any of that area? Entirely possible one of the hoses etc back there is shot, could all stand to be replaced.

One of the best ways to diagnose this stuff is to use a coolant system pressure tester - Harbor Fraught or such carry them, extremely useful tool, I use mine all the time, allows you to check for most leaks without any heat in the system or any dangerous moving parts. That would be my next step: pressurize the system and see where it's coming out.

The Mitten is a big state - where you at?

I haven’t looked into the backend yet but I’ll give a look. There isn’t any coolant leaking onto the ground and there isn’t oil in the coolant either. I’m wondering if there is maybe a partial clog somewhere in the system allowing gas by but not a lot of coolant so I way end up taking it to shop and having them back purge it but that’s kind of a last resort.

To answer your other question, I’m down here in Hillsdale,Michigan.

My overheating problems happened when the radiator fan motor died. Make sure your fan works.

Yeah the fans still work, I’m gonna get it back flushed at a shop hopefully next week and hopefully that fixes the problem. Thanks for the advice though!

After a good flush and using a pressure tester loaned from auto-zone found a broken hose in the back and cleaned out some gunk. Glad to have it back on the road and thanks your your help👍
