I'm in the process of getting to my leaking oil pan from underneath and I’m looking for some guidance on how to remove the steering gear from the lower steering column. I’ve removed the nut and bolt, and sprayed the pinion with some penetrating oil. If anyone has some insight I’m all ears. Thanks I’m advance. _________________ 1978 924 N/A |

Mine was sticky: I think I used a hammer and punch to drive against the underside of the pinion - with the rack still in initially, then once I broke it free I undid all but one bolt (on the side opposite the steering shaft) and tapped it the rest of the way off. You can't get a very direct angle, but if you turn it back and forth so you're driving at different sides, that should help. _________________ 1980 931 diamond in the rough |

I use a chain of socket extensions and a hammer to hit the rack from above, just be wise to where you place the impact. _________________ 1980 931 "Salt" Bucket wannabe racer (Dreaming)

Do you need to remove it from the steering rack?
I can't remember if I did or I got the pan out without it. _________________ /Magnus, Stockholm Sweden
