I am trying to get the courtesy lights to light up when I open my hatch. What I have figured out is that the hatch isn't grounded. I believe it is supposed to work by the wire at the base of the rear passenger side strut connecting to ground through the hatch. If I take a test wire from the lower strut wire to ground on the car the light lights, but finding metal on the hatch gives no light.

I did notice I had a rear windshield wiper motor and mechanism was removed, maybe it grounded through that? How do they ground if they don't have a rear wiper?

This has nothing to do with the hatch and has everything to do with the strut as you found -- when it closes, there's a ring around it that connects and pushes in, completing the circuit.

I have a non-stock strut, don't have the switch mechanism on it, was trying to figure out how to make it work, there are wires at each end of the strut and continuity, I would think my problem would be on all the time, not off all the time.

When I replaced my struts, I had to move that piece over from the old one. If you don't have it, maybe that's the problem. I have a parts car I can look at in the next couple days and see about pulling it for you, if you like?

Thanks, I looked at my old struts, I had saved them, but they didn't have the correct piece either. If you get a chance would be glad to pay for postage and or part. No rush.
