|
|
Speedo cable became disconnected from the OXS mileage counter on my ‘82 NA.
I’m pulling out the mileage counter and the two piece speedo cables while my new (one piece) cable arrives.
I removed the circlip from where the speedo cable connects at the left front wheel hub.
I see videos with this just sliding out of the wheel, but mine is stuck. I pulled the sheathing of the cable off but not the cable. I tried to hammer at the cable and it didn’t budge.
What am I missing? _________________ George

Pull the cap off the hub and try moving it with a pair of pliers side to side to free it, you are correct that is essentially "free" now that you removed the circlip. Just rust, grime , and friction holding it in. Try some PB blaster, I always get it out by turning the steering rack to give the most access in the wheel well and getting a good grip on the cable and giving it a yank. Got it out today. Thanks Mclaren924 for the reassurance. Indeed it just needed a lot more force than expected. I got locking pliers on the cable and levered it out on a pry bar resting on the strut. Used some PB Blaster around the grommet too but it didn't help getting the grommet out. I think it was just the outer, rubbery covering of the cable sheathing getting kind of seized in the steering knuckle and the grommet.
Other things I did which may/may not have helped:
- I cut and picked out the rubber grommet where the cable feeds through the steering knuckle... I picked the entire grommet out, wondering if I should get a replacement for it but I can't find a part number/diameter for it in the PET.
- I put a tight fitting tool into the speedo cable hole in the spindle and it caught on some more rubbery outer sheathing that was stuck in the spindle, which I removed.
- I first pulled out the inner part of the cable out of the spindle, and removed the sheathing afterwards. I highly doubt this did anything useful though. _________________ George
