|
|
My 78 came with a dealer installed AC from Cool Volkswagen Products Corp.
It's currently not working, and I dont know why. The switch in the vents doesn't turn anything on when enabled. And there are two wires, Red and White in the engine compartment that isn't connected to anything. So that makes me wonder if that's for the control unit, but I don't know where or how they are connected.
Does anyone here have the Cool AC system installed in their car?
I'd love to see how it's connected on yours to see if I can trouble shoot.
Or if you have successfully restored or fixed one.

Hey mine has a similar add on kit...Wiring was pretty poorly done and the kit was actually probably good at the time. Pully does not line up very well and have found no useable info so I'm probably going to scrap mine. _________________ 1980 931 "Salt" Bucket wannabe racer (Dreaming)

It doesn't have the same vent setup but AC Compressor looks identical. _________________ 1980 931 "Salt" Bucket wannabe racer (Dreaming)

There's mention and schematics of the compressor in the 76-79 PET so it seems it was partially an option from factory? _________________ 78 924, 87 944S, 89 944 Turbo, 08 Cayenne |

If the refrigerant circuit is still sealed (even if the refrigerant has all leaked out), I'd think you can save it. I'd flush it out and replace any seals - it could just leak out in no time or even shell out the compressor and spread black death through the system. At this age, it would probably also make sense to replace the refrigerant hoses. If you've got a hydraulic shop nearby, you should be able to take the hoses to them and have the rubber replaced. The wiring could be something you have to figure out on your own. I'm sure the kit came with an instruction sheet, and if it was a fairly common kit, somebody may have scanned a copy you could find online somewhere. There's a good chance you're on your own though... Seems it'd be more complicated than refurbishing a factory AC setup, but if you want/need AC, I'd say it's worth the effort. _________________ 1980 931 diamond in the rough |
