Hi all

I'm new to the forum and to 924's. I've been long term admirer of transaxle Porsche's and am starting to look at taking on one as a bit of a build project.

I've got my heart set of building a 924 road/rally style car. I've always loved grp 4 rally cars from the 70's. So inspired by Lancia Stratos' and the Michalotto Ferrari 308 grp 4 cars I want something wide, boxy and with pop up headlights. I know there are a number of people that create carrera GT replica's but I am considering something a little more aggressive, so possibly using modified GTR style panels. Something like this

I know this won't be to everyone's taste but I'd like to create a car for me to enjoy in the style I like. However I'm looking for some advice on what car to use as a donor and how easy it will be to get some performance to match the looks of the build.

I'd initially been looking at a 924 S at 150-160bhp or a turbo at 170bhp. That doesn't sound like a lot of power so what would be my options to try and increase the bhp? I've seen a lot of engine swap options but I'm not after crazy horsepower and would like to avoid the complexities of an engine swap, so if I was looking to build an engine using a 2.5 or a 2.0l turbo units what are the options and are there any recommended engine builders/specialists in the UK that might be able to help me build or supply upgrade options that I could speak to?

I'm doing as much research as I can at the moment so appreciate and links or information from members here.

Thanks

Trev

A turbo or an S have the better 5lug brake system, transaxle shaft etc. But are more costly to buy of course, especially if you will chop it up anyway. From an engine perspective, A 924 turbo can be run like mine at around 240-250hp with fairly mild modifications, or maybe 25hp more with modded fuel distributor like steeve in the UK. More than that is challenging on the standard inection system, and it need to be in perfect condition. The other option is to just boost a stanard n/a engine, similar to what Magnus have done on his rat rod: https://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=45866, then you can push it further than what is possible with a 931 system. If you are doing the whole EFI and modern turbo thing you could aswell start with an n/a engine, they are dirt cheap to start with.

The S engine is weaker and not made for boost, not the best starting point for that. Maybe a mild supercharger boost coudl be enough0 (Ciprian :wink)

But to be fair, a 924 turbo with intercooler and around 200hp feels pretty quick on back roads, more so if you will use it on gravel. Lots of power is mostly usable on the internet, less so on real twisty roads Track use is a litte bit different of course.

Cedric, this is so helpful thanks. This is exactly the info I was hoping for as gives me some things to consider. Power wise 240-250bhp will be plenty, like you say plenty of power to have fun in and hopefully helps keep the build budget reasonable. So it sounds like NA or turbo might be my best options as a base.

Do you have a link to mods/build for your turbo I could look at?

Thanks

Trev

Here is the thread on the original madman Dutchpug with the project black, who took the n/a all the way to 2 bar boost, sadly the pictures are dead, but there are some numbers in there at every stage, a fun read.

My thread has mostly dead pictures aswell, but if you are interested in any details I can put them in there.

Hey Trev, I'll self-plug here shamelessly.

Depending on your preferences, budget and goals, you can also consider the following setup: NA engine with my supercharger kit.
www.the924.com

The configuration I make and deliver is a very safe one, designed for the completely stock 924 and the home mechanic.
All parts included, bolt on kit.
So you can do this conversion yourself within a weekend.
If you ran EFI, you could increase the boost on the supercharged setup and achieve higher top end power.
But the main attraction about this setup is the responsiveness and low rpm instant torque.
It really bumps the 924 into the next stage of fun because it enlarges the area under the torque curve.

The advantage of this setup is that it is a developed and stable setup, it is bolt on (tune) and drive. Cost is not too big either.
Another advantage is that you can run the very cheap to get, and maintain 924NA not an expensive and rare turbo model.
Another advantage is responsiveness, no lag, no fuss, press and it goes.
The sound is absolutely fantastic in my opinion and its half of the reason to get this setup.

Disadvantage is top end HP is nowhere near what a spiced up turbo can be.

Hi Trev,
One option is to supercharge the 924S.
I see you are in the UK: you can speak to Tom at augment automotive who built a supercharges 924s hillclimb car for a client. If I remember correctly he told me very easy to do 220bhp.
I would like to do something similar at some point down the road and would start from a 924 rather than turbo: cheaper to buy a clean one to start with and apparently easy supercharger bolt on.
