I bought an 88 924s in really good condition that had been sitting off an on for ~20 years. The original owner passed away and the car was kept by their father for a decade, and then sold to the person I purchased it from, where it had sat without maintenance for a few years.
I have driven the car three times since, once to get tires put on, once to the store, and lastly to get gas.
After I filled up for the first time I noticed a smell leaving the lot. I assumed it was the alternator belt stripping and tried to make it home. I made it less than a mile away, the headlights dimmed and flickered, I pulled over. We tried to jump the vehicle but no luck, I later tested the battery and it had a full charge.
The next day I was able to start and move the vehicle into a parking spot. I later tried to drive it to work, and it stalled on an incline.
I get it towed to a local mechanic, where it will no longer start.
It is not the Dme relay. After reading and scouring forums my assumption is rust in the tank/sending unit, but the mechanic is confident the issue is with the starter.
Someone in a forum basically suggested a book on Bosch ignition systems. I do not know enough to be able to solve all this own my own, but part of my goal for this car was to learn more.
There is tach bounce and the fuel pump is activating. My question is what to check next and how, I don’t want to send the starter off to be rebuilt only to find that it was another problem all along.
I do plan on taking it to a specialist eventually, but I’d rather drive there if possible.
Any help is appreciated! |
