Posted: Mon Mar 02, 2015 6:15 am Post subject: Where to Find Replacement Front Brake Calipers 48mm 4-lug |
|
|
We're rebuilding the front suspension on a 1980 Porshe 924 NA. We recently ordered new rear drums, front rotors and front calipers.
The front calipers that we ordered from PartsGeek.com look identical to ours, however, the distance between the mounting points is shorter (88mm VS. 106mm) when measured from outer-most point of the mounting holes using a micrometer). We notified the supplier that they are incompatible and RMA'd the calipers.
What we ordered:
A1 Cardone Brake Caliper - Front Left (Part Number: 94-05232126)
A1 Cardone Brake Caliper - Front Right (Part Number: 94-05232125)
Details and Questions:
Our OEM calipers have a 48mm piston.
We have 4 lug wheels.
Are the OEM calipers considered 'M' type?
Where's a good place to purchase front brake calipers for this application?
RockAuto has these available and look identical to our application, however, the bore size is different at 1.73" (44mm) (I'm assuming they're sleeved from being remanufactured?) Anyone know if these are compatible?

| I would t directly to cardones site and sees at the list. The call them tech desk. They have been very helpful to me in the past and lost quite a few 924 parts. Worse case get a rebuild kit from pelican. They are really very easy to do yourself. |

I would love to replace the seals/rubbers as the overhaul is simple process; unfortunately, the brake piston is corroded =(
We've contacted Parts Geek after RMAing the incorrect calipers using their support ticket system, however, they're difficult to get on the phone to clarify discrepancies on their system.
Has anyone out there know the appropriate replacement part for the front calipers for this application? I understand they're an earlier type of brake caliper and am pretty sure they are identical to my 1979's brake set up as well. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924

I got rebuild kits through NAPA autoparts about 8 years ago... not sure if they still have them. They were about $15 per caliper _________________ '80 924 M471,Wideband O2, Full coilover susp,23/19 sways,Bilstiens,KLA Strut Brace,Roll Bar,Test Pipe,BBS RS, Willwood BBK

Contacted Cardone this afternoon via phone. The tech was very nice, but indicated that they are currently not manufacturing/remanufacturing the calipers.
Photo of the funky caliper piston.

I'd call partsheaven and have them send some used ones. Then hopefully source a rebuild kit for the rings and rubber boots. (keep fingers crossed the pistons arent corroded) _________________ '80 924 M471,Wideband O2, Full coilover susp,23/19 sways,Bilstiens,KLA Strut Brace,Roll Bar,Test Pipe,BBS RS, Willwood BBK

Apparently the correct OEM part numbers for these calipers are as follows. These numbers were rusted into oblivion on ours.
LEFT: 77 615 107
RIGHT: 477 615 108
I'm going to call Reybestos tomorrow morning to ask about the calipers they're providing on rockauto - they look correct in the second photo, but not the first (see the mounting ears). Not sure if it's an optical illusion or not...

Right/Passenger: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=523312&cc=1263259&jnid=431&jpid=3
I'm also going to call on the ebay rebuilds tomorrow. Relatively expensive at $87.50/per VS $40-65/per, but at least they appear to be the correct version! Thanks Fasteddie! _________________ 1979 Porsche 924

Called Reybestos tech support. They indicated that both calipers are now obsolete/unavailable.
Called the eBay rebuilder, they were very nice and seemed like they conduct straight up business. Ordered. Came and are absolutely excellent!
The corrosion on the pistons will cause them to leak if you simply rebuild the seals $14.00 for seal/s It would make life much easier if the pistons were still nice! _________________ 1979 Porsche 924

Another old thread resurrection.
Step one for 91 Passat brakes seems to have passed. The bolt hole measurements are the same as the original post. Will compare to the actual car now.

What model of VW chassis? B3/4?
If so, what model did are these capliers for, and do you see a likely imporvement (larger pads/pistons)?
Please keep us informed. _________________ '81 Porsche 924 NA

I have another resurrected thread in the performance section.
I ordered Centric brand(PN# 14133030) 1991 Passat calipers yesterday for $36 each from rockauto.
I'm looking for a better performance and a viable replacement. The stock calipers are nowhere to be found and the brake hardware is another cost. _________________ 1981 Weissach Edition #179 |

My calipers were in very rough condition: rusty, seized, bleeder screws broken and rusted. But I gave them to a brake rebuilder near me and they managed to fully restore, rebuild, and powdercoat for about $100 CAD. I guess not as cheap as the Passat calipers but something for people to consider. _________________ George
