I am hiring a shop to deal with my rusted exhaust manifold and downpipe, so I am wondering what options I have to replace it.

The ideola thread on the topic suggests MSDS, Stahl, and Bursch, it seems none of those are currently available (only MSDS has a website that looks like it was last updated in 2003, we'll see if they email me back)

Any modern recommendations? I feel like getting a junk exhaust manifold and having it restored might be the way to go, is that a reasonable approach?

Yeah, I'd expect MSDS is the likely best option right now.

Word is Stahl got out of the business some time back.

I keep buying MSDS headers when I need them. Last purchase was last year. Good quality.
Ideola bought the rights and remaining parts for Stahl a bunch of years ago. Since he's moved on to other projects, he might be interested in selling the Stahl package. If you are a good welder, this could be something to look into.

thanks both. MSDS got back to me. does anyone know what it would take to bring back the emissions system with MSDS headers installed?

as far as I can tell, I would need to have a bung welded on the downpipe for the O2 sensor. Is there anything else? EGR port? I have an 82 NA.

Just a note on installation, there is a bolt tab cast on the cast iron motor mount that needs to be sawed off. I used a bolt instead of the furthest back stud as the manifold interfered somewhere there. Finally, good luck getting manifold in with the motor in place, I always had difficulty with that, hopefully someone has an answer.

+1 to all of the above; I have been able to install the header with the motor in by dropping the crossmember, if I remember correctly...
