I have a 1977 Porsche 924 and I've been working on it on and off for a few years, and every time I put the shift lever in gear there is a lot play in each gear. Each gear has as much play in it as if it were in neutral. Is there something wrong with the linkage or is that normal? I'm very new to this car and I've been learning about as I go.

It is fairly common for the shift lever to shift rod pin to wear and the plastic bushings to fall apart.. Search in the How To section for repair of the shift lever.

First remove the shift knob and pull up the rubber boot on the lever and then disconnect the shift rod from the lever. The lever connects to the shift rod on pin with with plastic bushings. The pin wears frequently getting quite rounded. Search in the how to section for repairing the pin, new bushings are inexpensive and a dealer item, Pelican Parts and Paragon might have them also.

I looked at the repair process they did, I did it differently. I believe the existing pin is either 8 or 10mm, so I ground off the back of the pin where it is welded to the lever, knocked out the pin and welded in a grade 10.9 bolt of the appropriate length. New bushings and a lock nut and done.

As mentioned ,before, I would start with shifter itself. Only 944 makes inexpensive, upgraded one that is direct bolt on. I used them before and like it a lot. It eliminates play pretty much completely.
Here is the link.
