The 931 I stumbled into ownership of, I think I saw many years prior in Alpena at a mobile home dealer long before I got it..
I only paid a few hundred bucks and some motorcycle work for it from my friend that bought it when we saw it on the side of the road for sale, paid $650 for it there I think..
I have put a lot of money, and a ridiculous amount of time into it since then, and it still needs lots of little things like trans work and a new heater core etc.. because I have just been fixated on engine side stuff..
I have no idea what my car is worth.. Probably less because of all my custom engine stuff would be a lot for someone else to understand and take over...
But I don't really care because I'm sure it is worth a lot less than I would even consider selling it for.. It's worth a lot more to me than whatever $$ someone else would give for it.. I can't ever sell it because the loss would be massive..I do consider all my time worth something..
And besides, what would I replace it with?
I don't much like newer cars with all their fancy electronics..
I can probably keep my 931 running forever as long as you guys don't jack the price of parts up to the moon with all your wishes for higher values, lol..
I want it to stay a $2500 car so I can keep affording to fix it!
I love the car.. It is exactly what I want it for, and it is something that I can actually customize with things I enjoy making myself rather than just a bunch of bolt-ons.. |
This, Fasteddie, is the proper attitude in my most humble opinion.
In general I feel that when the value of a particular car "sky-rockets", it's not so much that it's a great car, (although it could be), but more of what in my old "dirt track" racing days with Sprints and Midgets we would call the "Bag of Dog Shit" theory. If someone won a race with a bag of dog shit taped to the hood, the next week there would be 10 more cars out there with a bag of dog shit taped to the hood.
Same goes with "collector" cars to a certain extent. At one time I was a "fixture" at things like the Barrett-Jackson Auctions as part of my job. Sold cars for clients, attended the cocktail parties, blah, blah, blah. A big thing I discovered was that the big "players" were exactly that. They weren't enthusiasts, they didn't drive the cars, they weren't even real "collectors. They were "commodity traders" in the game for the sole purpose of making money. And just like any commodity, if the price goes up, the profits are higher. And to make sure that happened they would, by dumb luck or clever planning, "trade" certain makes and models of cars among themselves to create a "demand or desire" for said make/model among the general public all while inflating the prices. The fads would grow to such an extent that entire cottage industries of support for the restoration of these vehicles was created for some! Between them and the blingmasters and posers the collector car hobby, as far as the enthusiast is concerned, has been terribly spoiled and priced out of reach for many, who I believe, ought to be the real caretakers of these, and many other makes/models of, cars.
So, enjoy it while you can afford to, as I don't see much hope for future enthusiast caretakers considering the crap that has come from manufacturers in the last 20 or so years!!! _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

I hope that you are right. Maybe the rising tide will lift all boats for those of us that own not-so-clean 931s. I bought my car for $3500. I figure that I'll put $5K into it and then it will be worth $4000. |
Chuck, your 81/80 hybrid 931 was the one that got away for me! Glad to see it went to a good home! Let me know when you're ready to sell (was born in 1981, but want the 1980 dogleg transmission!)
Anyone have thoughts on this 1980 931? It seems to be bucking the trend and losing value:

Well, I'm glad that you passed on it. These cars never come up for sale withing 300 miles of me.
It's fun to drive and I have a long list of projects...including rehabbing the G31 transmission.

Thanks for letting me know. I'd like another 931 but my wife would kill me. Do you happen to have an extra G31 transmission with good synchros? I might have to bite the bullet and send mine out for rebuild. I suppose the other idea would be to convert it back to the 81/82 transmission but I understand that is a big project.
Returning to the marketplace discussion...happened to see this on Pelican...no affiliation. Interesting intercooler.

That's quite a nice looking car..
I myself would rather rebuild the G31..

Do you happen to have an extra G31 transmission with good synchros?

The BaT seller didn't include the receipt showing the damage to the left rear suspension (indicating the left rear hit must have been fairly substantial).
In fact, the damage to the front right valance narrates to me that it took a good hit in the left rear that then jumped the front right into something (curb, etc). There was also zero mention of that gnarly frame rail gash in the BaT copy.
Furthermore, the miles in the handwritten logbook show 45k miles in 1990... and it's being sold with 53k today - so 8k in 20 years says something is up. Also weird there is no real discussion of the handwritten logbook in the BaT auction, which seems strange to me as that would be a great bit of history to have... provided it painted the car in a good light (no pun intended). It's already a Euro delivery car (to Mexico) that has made its way to the US... sooooo not mentioning it makes me even more suspicious.
Bottomline is hopefully the BaT buyer did their research... because that car had it pretty rough at one point. The Pcarmarket bidders are obviously doing their due diligence, but it looks to me like the current seller is also being more honest.
It's a shame because it looks good otherwise and that color combo is absolutely marvelous. |

Im my opinion, the 931 is one of the lowest number Production porsches, even less than the 968. AND ITS A TURBO. you used to be able to get them for $500 (if you were lucky) sure not in mint condition, but Im talking running and driving. (if barely) My current one I got for 1k (but I am cheap as hell!) I think few people here are "mint condition, show room quality people)
I always loved the fact that you could buy a "turbo" Porsche for $500!!! isn't that what a 12y/o you fantasized about? But you can still find them for $ 1800-3000 (thankfully the upper-crust hasn't discovered them)
The Numbers are on a slow but steady decline. Right now this IS the 356 speedster of the "modern era" (and they BOTH have a VAN engine, so HAH!!)
So you either have the "super mint and stock" cars which are few so their value will be high. But you run into the typical "poor mans porsche" dilemma they can't afford to keep it up, sell at a loss...next guy thinks he gets a deal because he's cheap/poor too, again can't afford to maintain it, and the pattern repeats until it ends up in the hands of some who can bring it back from the brink, OR it goes to the scrap yard.
Its like that toy your mom threw away, and now is worth a lot of money, Partly due to its rarity now and partly due to nostalgia.
But once the numbers get very low and the "crowd" catches on prices will jump, but that could be another 5yrs.
Personally I could never spend 10K or more on a mint car, since there is much performance to be had with fairly cheap mods, but obviously at the cost of "collector value"
Part of the fun for me Is the cheapness. Once they become too expensive it won't be the same, then you have to start thinking "wow my car is now worth XXXX! oh I have to becareful!" _________________ It was either this or a giant box of legos |
