I've never been able to do it with an air wrench, I've always used a rachet and a long breaker bar.

Then your air wrench or your air supply pressure is no good. My Ingersoll-Rand IR-2131 has 600 ft-lb's in reverse at 90 PSI. When I get it up to 120 Lord knows what it's putting out. $189 at Sears.

Some VW shops have a 36mm steel plate style socket that works well for the air compressor challenged (me). Just put it on the nut and take a large hammer (not sledge) and with a few whcks you are in business.
I think it should be tightened to 225 lbs so do not nail it on too hard when buttoning it back up.

go to a VW shop. they have a tool that has the 36 mm socket inside. you hit it with a sledgehammer to get it loose.

With some of the advice that comes out of here, I'm sure glad we don't own nuclear reactors! |

I think it would be better to tap it a few times with a small sledge ( 2-5 lbs 1-2 kilos ) not a 20 lb 9 kilo monster , then to bash it repeatedly with a framing hammer .
