So the plan is to make a mold of the rearend of a spare chassis and hang it off the backend of UBoot. I also integrated the rear bumper into the mold and tucked it.
Bondo...lots of Bondo.
After days of sanding and fitting...time for some primer.
More sanding and a few coats of paint...almost ready to flange up and pull a mold.

Getting the plug ready with flanges all around and filleting wax.
Gelcoat sprayed on the buck.
Couple of days of laying fiberglass to get a sufficiently stiff mold.
Overall the mold turned out great. Got some spots on the taillights where the paint lifted off and messed up the gelcoat..but I can fix that and we are going to put stickers there anyway.
Now time to clean it up, polish it, and make a rear clip.

It took two days to prepare and lay up this mold and a significant amount of consumables. This is my biggest carbon part to date.
I think I shed a tear when this came out of the mold. Holy ****...it is 8lbs of awesome! It is not perfect, but will work for racecar stuff.
I am liking the all carbon murdered out look with the diffuser mounted.
Carbon wing on a carbon rear-end...can't ask for more. Bumper crash bar structure in place and wing mounts fabricated.

Fabricated the trans/diff cooler outlet duct and then cut a hole out of the carbon rear-end.
All of the rear floor sealed up, taillights mounted, tow hook attached, wing bolted on, everything painted, and the complete rear-end is reassembled. I also made a small catch tank for the trans/diff vents.

All completed...with sticker taillights...you can almost not tell they are fake.
We had been dealing with a little bit of oil seeping out of the oil cap under high load corners...which then hits the exhaust...which then puffs smoke out of the hood vents...which then causes the driver to go huh...which then he lifts to make sure the engine is okay. We tried several new oil caps, but nothing helped...so now it is a proper spin on oil cap with a bung welded to the valve cover.

Race Recap from The Ridge in Sept'23
As for a race summary...I didn't get a lot of pictures of the broken parts ..but here is a summary. On Saturday, we were racing in the rain (which was a river at times) and I lost brakes going into the thumb. I came in and we found a cracked brake hard line...took about and hour to repair and we were back out. We finished the race and when we returned we could hear the rear wheel bearing screaming...so we got into that replacement. During that job, we found a crack in the rear control arm where the wheel bearing snap ring goes. Of course we didn't have a spare on hand...so my son was kind enough the transport one up to the track (in exchange for a steak). We got that repaired and the alignment back in shape.
On Sunday, things were going great...until I lost boost while fighting for the lead of the race. We found the boost hose has slipped off so a quick repair and we were back out. Unfortunately, it happened again a few laps later so we had to come in and do a little more to make it secure. The rest of the day went well...until the exhaust pitch changed and we broke the wastegate pipe in the engine bay. This also melted the radiator fan and some coolant lines...so our day was done.
No more silicon...that is the goal. We had the boost hose pop off twice at the last race and I have had enough of that. I actually found that the aluminum tubing had started to deform where the clamps were being tightened down. Anyway...no more of that ****! HD Clamps from the compressor housing all the way to the throttle body. I have never played with these...mainly because of cost...but I can quickly see the appeal.
This is a minor issue...but the stock throttle body set-up on these engines use a paper gasket against the intake manifold. I had to relocate the TB so I had waterjet a simple 1/4" aluminum plate to bolt to the intake manifold. For some reason, we get a small amount of air leaking here and over the course of a race we get some dirt build-up which is annoying. To address this, I designed up a plate with an integrated o-ring which should do the trick. BTW...the one plate also features an integrate tab to bolt a clamp that holds the alternator charging cable. It is all in the details.

Truly an indescribable reliance and determination to get this done as fast and beautiful as you have done. The car has truly come a long way from when I saw it a few years ago when I came to raid your parts stash. I'm starting to wonder how much 931 is actually left in the old girl haha, not that it matters. Thanks for constant updates and happy new years! _________________ 1980 931 "Salt" Bucket wannabe racer (not started)
