First I want to say thanks. This board has been a great resource for me during this project; most every question I had regarding the car was answered when searching the board. I have finally signed up with hopes to pay it forward when I can and continue to use this great resource.

I have always owned water-cooled Volkswagens, and admired Porsche cars; the 924 made a logical move into Porsche ownership for me. After lots of research on what to look out for, I went on a search. I ended up finding this car 2hr west for right around $2k. Running, driving inspected, mostly original aside from a poor quality re spray at some point in its life. Interior was in poor condition, alternator and speedometer did not function but otherwise a solid car.

A few days after I brought it home:

Put her up on the lift and did my first round of maintenance: brakes all around, oil change, coolant flush, tires, brake fluid flush, exhaust, 1 wheel cylinder, front wheel bearings, steering shaft (had to cut down an old supper beetle shaft as I could not find a replacement) and ran a new wire from the alternator to the battery solving that issue.

Drove the car for a little while and heard a catastrophic noise from under the hood.... cam oiler tube broke loose from one of the mounting tabs (busted weld) and took out the elbow with it. What a sound that made being beat to death by several cam lobes. Found replacement parts and continued on. Shortly thereafter more catastrophic noises, this time from under the car... the Clutch let loose (springs popped out) so that resulted in a new clutch with all the fixings + a rear main seal. Ended up replacing most of the suspension and adding a 944 spoiler, and rocker stripes while the car was down:

Although the paint job presents well in pictures, it was several shades off the original, blistered, single stage, and hiding some accident damage underneath... and the kicker, nothing was removed when it was sprayed so EVERYTHING had over spray on it. So I decided to take the plunge and pull the car all apart and rehab the exterior, refinish a set of wheels, install a new set of seats, etc

That's about it up till this point. Still need to disassemble the speedometer and fix the odo gear, defroster needs attention (blows well from front facing vents but nothing from the defroster, any tips?) driver side exterior door handle is broken (let me know if you have a spare you are willing to part with), and a bunch of small detail stuff. Plan is to completely sort the car out and get back into auto x racing... it's been a long time. In the meantime, its a great summertime commuter that my kids enjoy riding in.

Thanks for looking!

Would be seen as sacrilege to mess with a pre 79 924 in UK/EU. Early cars are rare and values are rising and heading into five figure sums for original unmolested examples with low owners and mileage.

I like the repaint, drop and wheels. I'd leave stock interior and spoilerless if it were me, maybe with euro bumper treatment. but its good see it get some love and not left to rot/die. Good work

Thanks for the comments! It has been a fun project thus far. The color is called sunset metallic, new ford color. Depending on the lighting it will appear from dark red to a orange/ copper. The idea to toss the decals on the car came from my 4 year old son; he has a red ride on car with very similar decals... "daddy, needs stickers like my car!"

Carrera RSR: Thanks! Wheels are 90's era ARE 16x7 et20 that I found on a fox body mustang and re finished in gold / polished. I would love to put euro bumpers on this car. In all honesty, I would have been more than content to leave the appearance of the car as is. If starting with a clean, original paint example I would have done just that. Unfortunately with the old body work falling out poor paint condition, numerous dents, and insane overspray, something had to be done to make the car presentable. I weighed the options of returning the car to factory condition vs what I have done. Regarding return on investment, that went right out the window the day the clutch blew out... these are sub $5k cars in our market, so the decision was made based on personal taste at that point.

Still hunting a driver side exterior door handle if you have any leads

If you can at all afford it, DO the Euro bumpers. The difference is stark, you won't regret it. Here is a picture of my new Euro car next to a N. America delivered car :

Soooooo much prettier in Euro trim.

Kenodog:

Beautiful pair of cars! Read the post on your your new acquire, that is awesome! Would love to come across a 931... I agree, the euro bumpers look like how it should, darn crash standards. I thought about shaving off the pie plates before paint and seeing your new turbo, makes me wish I had... very clean.

Looking at your pic made me think of something.... is there any way to adjust the positioning of the headlight assemblies within the opening of the header panel/ fender? When the car was painted, I had removed the metal headlight covers, plastic bezel, and the rest remained. Upon re assembly, I have a much larger gap between the header panel and the light cover than I do between the light cover and the fender.

Thanks!

There are shims and slotted holes used to align the lights in relation to the body.

Ian89c4, thanks!

Rasta: Thanks for the information, is this on the cover itself or on the collars that attach the housing to the horazontal bar connecting the lights? Going to look at the PET and see if I can figure it out... thanks

The shims are between the triangle brackets that attach the buckets to the body and the body. If you didn't mess with them it's weird that stuff moved on you.

But, should be an easy, albeit fiddly, fix.

Good luck!
