For you other guys, this is a mad mans project, probably nr 205 on the list of improvements you should do on your car. There's so much other stuff to sort fist if you just want to go fast but it's cool, that's for sure

I saw that post on that car and it is wicked!

Yeah, not even close especially for this '82. Just looking for reliable 200+. Maybe my GTR will be up closer to 300-400 but 1000? seriously, that is amazing. Love the vid of that car

Agreed a madmans project just to lose weight. Even though it bugs me its low hanging weight but it presents itself that way and I have to take it.

Interesting you said it was his driveshaft clamp, which I could see that being weak at that level, not anything with the tube itself.

It took some time for him to figure out the issue, it was driving the shaft forward making axial bearing on the crank wear out in no time. It got solved in the end though.

Sadly he is now leaving the 968 engine after a cracked block at the world time attack challenge in Australia last year. Now on its billet K series, but still gearbox in the rear

Was that a billet block as well or am I mixing 968 engine builds (Elmer Racing)

I get it... at some point you want reliability

No he ran a sleeved 968 block, but reinforced with bigger head bolts etc, alot of work on those engines. His spare one has been out for sale btw

They though about making a billet block, but opted out and went the K way due to the availability of fully working engine's. Keeping it together for a track car is way more challenging than flying down a dragstrip for a few seconds, they have had some challenges during the years .

I have not one chassis that could handle the 1000Hp motor sigh

Update, the alu torque tube is partially together and the small flange welded up. Almost ready...

Put the turbo on the balancing machine and took a baseline reading. It was obviously rebuilt and seemed decent balance wise. Installed the billet 2660 wheel and interestingly the balance improved. Not sure I want to mess with it further. Its crazy good. Turbo might just be going in the car this afternoon!

Also, just installed a upgraded door handle pull. I'll get a pic later. The process of installing is a PITA. Luckily the first setting was decent and the driver door opens nicely at a pull of the lever. No more yanking

Might be up the FB group already with a pic and a vid

Update.. waiting on some items out of Germany to finalize latest bearing carrier for the tube.

Tube is together finally and tacked up for final welding today. Once assembled will likely run it in before installing (Edit: Then the CS will get one too ... so much easier with G31)

Turns out turbo needed a new turbine. Will be swapping transmission since its out anyway. Brand new clutch going in that I have had on hand since last century. Script seats going in temporarily while sport seats get dealt with. Some interior work including replacement backseat panels. Innovate boost controller/AFR/Gauge getting installed in speaker pod along with VDO Boost gauge. Waste-gate is rebuilt with new diaphragm and guide. Some rear brake work completed. Still need to finalize fitment for the larger IC rad up front and get temp gauge for IC. New lightweight horns to replace stock units removed for IC Pump. There is probably more. Just can't think of it right now

So, as the dust settles and with the crash tabs we added on the tube to be like stock, its a savings of -14lbs or -6.35Kg

The bearing carriers will likely add a 1lb or so back as well. A lot of work for that weight savings and to raise CM in the wrong direction. Too bad we can't take it from the roof. Still, the weight is coming off

I had predicted around -15lbs so pretty much on target. The one planned for the CS is a bit more radical but also shorter with the G31.

Still waiting on the 'express' shipment from Germany on an item we need for the carriers...sigh...

Officially not a Turbo only balancing machine but balancing machines yes

We have been experimenting with the best way to balance but its doable for sure based on testing. Which is good because I currently have two turbos to balance with new wheels. I realized it was possible when we balanced these really small 50K rpm spindles.

On the '80 NA we balanced the camshaft as well as all the engine components. (which is what you are referring to I think)

We also have an IoT device that can detect vibration. I'm thinking we might strap in on the tube for fun.

Oh, I just realized the tube damper is also not going back into the aluminum torque tube. Another -6lbs

This is also why I want to keep an eye on the overall "vibes"

We shall see

So the parts we needed FINALLY arrived out of Germany. Super crazy how I can get some stuff fast from the other side of the planet but other stuff takes three+ months

Next step for the torque tube finalization to commence!

If work doesn't overwhelm too much this week I am hoping to go to final assembly and test. Working on the last 5% of the bearing carrier details. This has become a hot project. 3 More tubes to build after this one

So the experimenting continues. In order to final assemble I needed the clutch fork prepped but can't stand the needle bearings for this type of use. Times are different and proven tech can be applied. At least now we can start popping things together.
