|
|
So, I head out for work this morning in the MaybeMobile and the wipers won't work. Check the most obvious, the fuse, and it's blown. Throw in another and it pops as soon as the key is turned on. Relay is new. Any ideas? I'm at work without my Haynes manual to see what else is on this circuit that could be causing an excess current draw. I have a spare switch assembly at home I'll swap if I get there safely. _________________ 1981 Porsche 924 NA |

I pulled the relay and put a new fuse in. Popped as soon as I turned the key on. Was working fine up to this point. Nothing has changed to my knowledge. Confusing _________________ 1981 Porsche 924 NA |

Just swapped out switches and no dice. It did this before and a new relay cured it, but there's got to be another reason. _________________ 1981 Porsche 924 NA |

Wiper motor is shorted internally or there is a lot of corrosion in the wiring for the motor. _________________ Stefan

Or there is a lot of corrosion on the stalk switch. Pull the steering wheel off and take a look at the contacts.
Most likely it is corrosion at the motor end.
You can also check the grounds that are back behind the fuse panel. There are two large clumps of them at that are probably a little corroded. Perhaps the corrosion at the ground side is pulling too many amps.
Cheers,

You're right...it just wouldn't work if the ground was too corroded, not blow the fuse. I guess I was still thinking about motor internals. _________________ Ian Edgerly

There is one line going to the wiper motor that is always hot with ignition on. It may be shorted.
To test, unplug harness from wiper motor, replace fuse, turn on key. If fuse does not pop, wiper motor has an internal short. If it does, harness to motor needs repair. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Thanks y'all. In the last few days I've developed an intermittent no firing issue. Thought it was CIS/fuel delivery related, but I think I've ruled all of that out. I'll try what you said Rasta, once I get it starting reliably again. That's gonna be a while since our weather just turned for the worse. _________________ 1981 Porsche 924 NA |

Sounds like someone has some bad grounds and power connections under their hood. Time to break out the fine grit sandpaper and dielectric grease.
BTW, just to check, does it start and stall after the key is switched to the run position? If so, that's a bad ignition switch, which is a common failure. _________________ Stefan

I have cleaned every ground but the one behind the fuse panel, so I might as well clean it while I'm in there changing the ignition switch. It's been starting, but only runs for a few seconds after I release the key. I guess long enough to burn the fuel already in the lines from the distributor. It never fails to crank, just fails to fire. As cheap as the switch is, can't hurt to replace it I guess. _________________ 1981 Porsche 924 NA |

Just to update, I still don't have working wipers but it's starting and running well. Replaced the fuel filter and tada! Guess it just needed to be done. Still felt stupid for not doing it sooner. Still have yet to replace the ignition switch, but have one waiting to go in. Suspect this may be the cause of the popping fuse from talking with some mechanic friends. _________________ 1981 Porsche 924 NA |
