|
|
So I removed my fenders as one of them was rotting away and the other needed some love and i wanted to do a good painting job.
That being done, until i go pick up the new fenders I've started removing the caulking on the frame of the car and planned to simply paint black.
The idea behing this was to ensure no rust found it's way behind the caulking and also removing some weight.
A friend of mine mentionned this might be there for a reason.
Should I stop now removing that cualking or I'm good at removing it and simply painting the frame? _________________ 1979 924 NA |

caulking is probably there to prevent rubbing between the panels. They do move around quite a bit as the body flexes in turns and over bumps. You can probably take it off and paint, but I would suggest going to an autoparts store and finding some type of sealant to put back between them or you are going to have issues down the road or a really noisy car.

I use putty tape to seal between the fenders and chassis, the factory used it on the 944.
The material all over the chassis is a rubberized undercoating. You can strip it and paint the chassis as the factory did on racecars but you will lose the rust protection a street car needs, the paint on the chassis will be susceptible to rock chips. The areas at the top and bottom of the chassis behind the fenders where the 3 bolts hold it on is really the only area that seems to get rusty. |

sorry for my wrong wording i was referring to the rubberized undercoating.
I'll remove it and simply paint as my car is not a daily driver and will mostly never see rain.
and thanks Ozzie as i was wondering what to replace the joints with _________________ 1979 924 NA |

If I was going to strip the coating I would paint the fenders & chassis and then use putty tape as a sealant for assembly. Brushable seam sealer tends to be pretty messy & hard to get a high build.
I also recommend you use a clear chipguard over the paint at least in the wheel wells to protect from chips. |
