This toofah's trans was swapped with a 5-speed [type 016 Z] Never shifted well since I've owned it. Ref Haynes p153 Fig7.1b, #16 is "Ball socket on central tube", this ball socket does not seem to allow my guide rod to pivot left-to-right quite far enough... almost but not quite. Also ref p184 #15. It moves front & back fine but did not rotate left far enough to reach Rev & 1st gear.

I tried to pry-off the socket, but it didn't pop off easily and i didnt want to break it, didnt notice any haynes instructions on removal am i missing something?

Edit, ideola's new shifter may help. I want one.

Previous thread (same car different issues):

Ok got the engine running. It's on four jack stands now, removed exhaust for better access (and to clean/paint). I've disconnected the two bolts that mount on the sides of the trans so it would drop a little lower, torque & cv-shafts are still attached.

Now I am missing at least one of those plastic spacers, which may help. Also the guide rod may have been very close to the top when the trans was bolted in. I also noticed that the front of the guiderod seems to touch the torque-tube when it pivots left (towards R/1st). Any educated feedback welcome, if you have references please link.

Recently found this window in the seam between the carpet & back seats, will need to rebolt the trans before further adjustments. Next step is to adjust the locknut, then try a spacer above the guide.

Typically an inability to get the the 1st/rev gate isn't the ball cup joint, but the large "knuckle" on the main shift rod as the bushings do not last long and tend to disintegrate. Try double checking that piece of the linkage to ensure there isn't any slop at that joint and that the main rod is properly inserted in the frame mounted holder with the neutral spring installed.

The rod for the ball up is adjustable so it could be possible to get that adjusted incorrectly while installing. Unfortunately, I think youd have to remove the rod and cup to make any adjustments, which won't be easy in situ.

Ok ty, the bushings do sound like a good candidate, any advice where I can order these?

I have not yet been able to check that linkage because it is so hard to access, i'll start at the shifter as suggested.

They are 914 pieces, but there is a how-to on shifter repair for the snailshell/dogleg Porsche transaxles.

If you have the later Audi 016 then the linkage is the same as the 944's and there are lots of writeups and parts available (only944.com is one site with parts).

The type 016 Z is a snailshell, type 016/9 is the Audi.

On Ideola's page I see a dropdown to choose between G16 and G31 shifters and would not have expected a difference,

Edit, Off hand does anyone know the size of allen-wrench I need to remove the trans from the torque tube.

The instructions say to move the trans to the right to access the linkage, but that must apply to the Audi, not the 16Z because I've got two supports on either side of the trans. Any other tips on accessing this linkage appreciated.
