How do I test the engine compression? The Haynes manual says "chapter 1" but I didnt notice anything on the subject (yes, I didnt read it, only glanced over)

I use a compression tester with a screw-in fitting (as opposed to the type you have to hold in place by hand). Run the engine to get it warmed up and lubricated. Remove all the spark plugs. Attach the tester to cyl 1. Press the air release valve on the tester to reset it. Get in the car and crank the engine until the gauge stops advancing (several engine revolutions) (have the gauge positioned so you can see it from the drivers seat). Write down that reading, then repeat the test a few times on the same cylinder. Move on to cyl #2, etc. Then you might go back and test them all with some oil squirted into each cyl to check the condition of the piston rings.

I feel kind of foolish, I always used a wrench to turn over the motor, I never thought to use the starter...

pull the fuel pump relay to keep from dumping fuel for these test and also remove the coil wire so the car won't start

It is kind of hard to screw in the tester though.Even with headers, now just turn the motor over I think 5-8 times from the starter and read the guage.have all the plugs out its easier

You have to use the starter other wise the valves will stay open and leak at certain times...unless you have the arm of superman and a winch setup.
