Nice car, I think this has come up before. Regardless, read the 'seller's notes' and you'll get an idea on how he thinks/feels about this car. Spendy, in other words~!
I have both cars, the SE is lighter, and carries itself around corners better. It has the M030 suspension, so it should! Depends on what you want to do with the car, preserve-museum piece, or drive the heck out of it and have fun. Both cars will do that, but at what price? _________________ '83 944 Track car.

I agree. This car, given the mileage and the expected premium in price, is a bit different.
In general, what is the premium for an SE model, and is it worth it?
I'm not new to Porsches but am new to water cooled cars. I am thinking of adding one to the garage to play with and the 924S seems neat. Something different than a 944 but still fairly modern drivetrain with good aftermarket support.
My thought, If I'm looking, should I try to find an '88 SE or would any '88 be suitable to drive and do a few track days and autocrosses with. |

That car is a museum piece that will cost you a fortune, and will one day be quite valuable. It frankly deserves better than being beaten around as a track toy.
If you want a track car, buy any 924s and have at it. Every advantage the SE model has (aside from its rarity) can be replicated or exceeded with very little cost.
Maybe THIS ONE. . .nice list of recent expensive maintenance, and not that far from you. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I bought my SE from my friend Paul here on the board with the intent of turning it into a track car. I couldn't. It is too nice, so I have a beater '88 that I turned into a track car. I do, however, flog it on our country roads in western Wisconsin~! Which is like playing dodge-ball with live deer!
Even with the low miles on the Ebay car, you'll have to look for problems, or potential problems for a 27 year old car. The head gasket, for instance, on my track car was pretty rotted out. Usually due to poor choices in coolant. These aluminum engines like phosphate-free antifreeze coolants. Also, replacing vacuum hoses; and, how old are the timing/balance shaft belts, rollers, water pump, blah, blah, blah.
Low mileage cars like this reveal their problems as you put miles on the car. That said, a higher-mileage '88 might be a better option. And, if there is a service history that comes with the car. Mine came from a mechanic, reason why I buy cars from Paul~! Oh, and no idea on what that Ebay car is worth. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

This looks to be a very nice example of the '88 Special Edition. The interior especially looks great since the thin fabric on the seats usually wears through by the 50K mileage mark. The sunroof was not standard on these cars. The LeMans decals probably were added later as the North American special edition (option code 756) was not, to my knowledge, called a LeMans. I've owned a very nice example of this car for the past eight years and use it as my daily driver (I'm retired and drive it only 3500 miles/yr). If there is such a thing as a collectible 924S, this is probably it but don't buy it as a short term investment. It is a wonderfully handling car and the slightly extra HP and engine torque (above the '87 model) is an additional plus. If the car can be purchased at a decent price it would make a great driver which, if well maintained, should not depreciate. It may even turn out appreciating in value over the long haul (who would have thought that a 4cyl 914 would ever be worth what nice examples are going for today, and unlike a 914 you can actually take the 924S on comfortable weekend trips). I purchased mine in 2006 for $5K USD, as a driver, and believe I will never lose money on it should I ever sell it - I will likely keep it until it dies or I do. Here is a link to pics of my car in case you want to compare the car in the listing to an original example. The only non-standard parts on my car are the sport steering wheel (which was an option) and the radio (my car came with no radio).

Thanks for the input everyone. Whatever I end up with I won't be stripping or overly modifying anything, just enjoying it and maybe doing small suspension or brake upgrades. I'll keep my eyes open and see what I come up with.
ronjeds - Beautiful car and thanks for the pictures. I like the idea of the SE as a from the factory light weight with improved suspension/handling. |

Yeah, if I wasn't knee deep into cars, I'd track our SE. However, getting permission from the wife would be problematic! She adopted the car soon after we got it~! _________________ '83 944 Track car.
