I am going to remove and clean my WUR this weekend on my 78 924. My question is how much stuff do I have to remove to get to the WUR. What should I expect when I remove the fuel lines. Will they be under pressure, how much gas will come out, and what could go wrong. I have seen some pretty good videos the actual taking apart and cleaning process but nothing on how to remove it from the car.
Thanks, Jack _________________ 1978 924

Hey Jack,.. I just did this myself, but I didn't have to disassemble it. Start by inspecting the electrical connection make sure your getting voltage there then disconnect it. then check for resistance on the WUR heater. Mine had 18Ohms. Then place an old T-shirt under the WUR and crack the lines, any fuel should be caught by the old T-shirt. Make sure you hold the WUR as that one bolt is small and won't be able to counter act torque for the removal of the lines. You may even might want to disconnect from the intake first. to each their own.
Next,.. is up to you.. you can disassemble or do what i did and save time. I used a pick and pulled out the clogged up screens and left them out. then sprayed carb cleaner through both holes back and forth and that cleaned a lot of gunk out then I re-installed.
unless your O-ring is damaged or the heater element isn't working. I see no need to take this thing apart. You can get a reman special ordered through O'reilly's for $100ish through IMC.
Happy cleaning,.. ohh one more thing,.. you will have to adjust your A/F mixture when you remove the screens. More fuel will be coming to the engine. |

I just found my WUR and started trying to remove it, turned out to be a real pain in the ass, electrical connector wouldn't come loose until I pull one of the bolts with was holding the electrical lines in place. Getting the bottom bolt out is proving to be even tougher as there is a hose in the way that doesn't want to come out. I had to pull a ton of hoses and lines to get to it. You are making this sound really simple, I am having no such luck.
So you cleaned it and removed the filters without even taking it out of the car? How'd you do that exactly? Really awkward angle to spray anything into.
Thanks. |

John, the point of my post is that I think removing the WUR is going to be a major pain in the ass and was asking how much stuff should I expect to remove to get to it. Did you get yours out, and if so did cleaning it improve the operation of your car. _________________ 1978 924

I have had a couple of WURs in and out of my mk2 turbo. IIRC I removed the coil from the bulkhead to get to the gubbins. You have to rely somewhat on feel to get it back in and as a precaution stuff plenty of rags back there in case you drop a bolt or washer. I guarantee that the backs of your hands will be shredded by the coil bracket by the time you are done. Worth it because it will transform the running of the engine. Good luck. _________________ 1981 931 series2 Euro spec |

What are you talking about? where should it be? This is an early 924, the fuel system is different then your typical 1977. Technically my car is a 1976. |

Hey Thomas, your WUR sits opposite of the Trottle Body, high up on the inlet manifold.
Odd place…
PET isn't clear on the subject in its diagrams if you don't know where to look.
This ebay image shows the WUR in its proper seating at about 8 o'clock.

So I went out and looked at the car, I did see that mounting location you speak of, but I don't think from factory they intended for this car to have the WUR mounted there. Reason being, there is an extension wire with a connection from your spot to my relocation spot. I dunno,.. there is a lot of factory crap over in your area. This may explain why it is so hard to check the oil in this car. In any event, someone put it there for a reason and it don't look aftermarket.
Again I have a very early 924. |

I ended up taking 4 screens out while leaving the final 5th screen on.
Will removing screens lean out or enrich the warm up air fuel ratio? Or will it simply leave it where it's supposed to be if clogged? |
