Can anybody on here tell me if the 2-5th gears on the 016Y will directly integrate into a G31.02 box? I'm looking to pick up another transmission to space out 2-5th gears for a wider more powerful engine. Plan is to couple this with an 8:33 ring and pinion for a very wide set of gears with a very tall 5th gear for fuel economy.
I may also just opt to use the 016Y with an 8:33 ring and pinion as it's gear spacing is better than that of the G31. |

Juha, I think you may be confusing the 016Y with the later Audi-based 016G/K/R/S. The 016Y/Z is a snailshell transmission like the G31. The Y = US, Z = ROW; the 016Y/Z was delivered in the 1979 NAs (and some late-model-year ROW versions of the 1978, apparently). The primary difference between the 016Y/Z and G31 is the input shaft and Rev/1st gears. The 016 Rev/1st are replaceable, the G31 are not; the G31 has a larger input shaft, and the Rev/1st shaft is consequently oriented differently between the two boxes. Consequently, the Rev/1st are not interchangeable, nor are the input shafts, selector shafts, or the front housing.
Otherwise, pretty much all of the internals from 2nd all the way back to the diff are fully interchangeable. There are also several 3rd-5th gearsets from the G15 gearboxes that are directly swappable. This makes it possible to setup an 016Y or G31 box pretty much to your desires, assuming you can find the parts. The 8:33 diff you want is a Euro-spec diff, and is not so easy to come by on this side of the pond.
Here is a link to the updated version of Pete's article, which contains many more details on the various permutations of gearboxes:

Here is a link to an excellent gearing chart that Jon McCullogh put together some time ago:

It doesn't show the ratios for the 016Z or G31.01/03/50 ROW boxes, but you should be able to get those out of the Tinucci article and update the spreadsheet accordingly. You'll have to hunt Pelican and Rennlist for details on the G15 gear ratios. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I have secured down my 016Y (found one local) and the G31.02 has been here for a while. I've talked with many people on about this conversion and while the 5R trans and tube would do right in, I really wanted to older and stronger box. I'm in $475 for both trans and the tube. The input on the 016Y is really pretty small, but the G31 is beefy. Any 951 box I get will also have to be gone through and they are heavier and will be much more difficult to remove from the car should I need to get in there to repair anything down the line. I'm figuring on 400-425 ft-lbs out of the engine. The 931 torque tube is certainly up to this task.
Right now I have both front covers off and taking a look at the front stage internals. My 79 box has been into before, so the plan is to tear into that one first as the learning curve box. I'm really just wanting to get 3rd and 4th gears out of that box. 5th is the same, 1st setup is completely different (as indicated above) and I'm keeping the G31 2nd to make it close to 1st.
I've done a lot of plotting of the gear charts, but with the 8:33 ring and pinion, my speeds with a 225-50-16 tire will be: 40,70,113,155,209. These are calculated at 7,000 RPM input speed which is no sweat for the AAN. The tall 5th is for economy as I am after at least 30 MPG out of the car. My engine will be at 2200 at 65 MPH and 2600 at 80 MPH in 5th. The car is light and with the turbo engine I should be able to pull that gear from that point. I probably won't use 5th below like 70 MPH. I won;t need to change RPM to make more engine torque...the turbo will do that for me. The turbo can then be sized for a really solid torque curve from 5,000 RPM on.
Have a lead on R&P out of the EU...just waiting for feedback. |
