One thing I have noticed about us 924'ers is that we are not "sports car snobs"
The wife was shopping today, and I was driving around as the traffic wardens were out, and I saw a nice red 924 (much like mine). When driving past, I was thinking, "nice car buddy", and the guy gave a friendly wave. If we were 911 drivers, we would have probably ignored each other.
I think this friendlyness might be based on the fact we know what the other probably has gone through with their car.
Oh. I think I may have solved the starter problem. I ran a 3rd ground cable to the other post of the coil. After an hour drive, and sitting in traffic, when I got home, I turned the car off, then tried to crank it again. It worked!!!
I will "force" a ground with a spanner next time I have starter troubles and see what happens. |

Yeah i know what you mean, we like are cars for what they are, not how people percieve us, and we stick together (like wilderbeast )
I think some 911 drivers like the car for the prestige they think it gives them, and some even knock the 924 as 'not a real porsche'....this coming from someone who drives a glorified beatle .
I think we are more enthusiastic down here at the budget end, hell even i was out with a spanner today and i know nowt about cars.

ive had a different experiance guys... Just before all these headaches i was taking my car to the body shop for an estimate to repair my left door. Till that door gets done i dont like anyone to see the car so i keep it hidden, undercover.
When i see folks to my right, im smiles, people to me left i bow my head in shame for my dent.
anyways, im making this left turn to my left theres a guy first in line at the traffic light, late 70s red 911, he could clearly see my dent shame on me, but ya know what, the guy still looked at me, gave me a wave HI. i waved back shocked that he said hi first.
Being an avid boater (offshore fishing), i know full well the ediquate (sp?) of he underground sociological "hellos & waves" the little boat waves to the bigger boat first, the nicer boat always has the option to wave back. If there are females involved, all rules off, big boat can wave at any given time. So i treat it the same way with my 924. Any other porsche i see, always gets a wave "HI", just about everyone says hi back.
and i really cant beleave i just wrote all this about saying HI. im really bored, apprently babbling. boy i need my 924 back.
i love our cars

Anyone that likes waving should get a Fiat 124 Spyder. You get and give waves plus a honk with every one you see. There's clearly an extreme comraderie among owners of that car. -And they know exactly what each other is thinking: "Good to see you have that piece of s running, good luck!", "Hope you make it home!", "I have tools, but glad I'm headed in the opposite direction!"

I had a good experience with a local boxter driver. Twice now I have seen him and he has given a thumbs up or a wave. I thinks its just the rich people who think there better then the rest of us. Like these guys at Norden Autohaus I took my car there a couple days ago and was waiting in the show room this guy could barly get the word HI out of his mouth. Idiot. Im gonna go back there dressed up with my porsche jacket on see what he does then.

When I was a teenager my first car was a '67 MGB. Back then almost all sportscar driver waved or flashed the lights. That's because they were sportscar drivers; enthusiasts. Most of the pudknockers out there driving new 911's and especially Boxters are posers and not enthusiasts. They might think that they're enthusiasts. They might belong to the club but they usually haven't got a clue.

I think 924 owners appreciate older vehicles in general. The newest car I own is a 1979 Jeep CJ7, the oldest is a 1966 VW bus. I fix new cars all the time with sensors and electric motors for everything. What crap. All that stuff is to sell cars to women drivers who just want to push buttons for everything. Of all the cars I own, I get the most honks and waves when driving the VW bus.

The fact is that there are a hell of a lot of Boxters & 911's around but very few 924's. Don't get me wrong both are fantastic cars but they are quite common. Same can be said for the Audi TT.

The post on the Fiat 124 brings back memories. I had a nice red 124 when I was in the Corps. I was stationed at a Marine airstation and I kept getting saluted(I was a corporal), the Marines must have thought only pilots drove sports cars. After a while, I just started saluting back.

Its worse in a PA-28-180, especially in IFR conditions. I was asked to maintain 130 knots on a long final....

my car gets alot of attention at stop lights espically when i travel around the beach where other VW mini vans mingle. most nippon car drivers in LA are intimidated by the sight of my '78 and dodge caravans usually roll up their windows because soccer moms dont want jimmy and sally to ask questions!
