With all this talk about weight, and performance, strange how we really don't test out new AERO kits, or modifications to the exterior, to any degree of sophistication.
In other words, when you put an AERO kit on your car, might you be screwing up the aerodynamics slightly, and thus screwing up speed? |

That's why I won't buy some Strosek rear hatch, or even a 944 spoiler.
Anyone got a wind tunnel? |

I really like that big whip antenna sticking out of the rear of the roof... I wonder what that does to the aero package... LOL

| I've got 4 or 5 wind tunnels here at work, dunno if I can use them or not though. |

| No really I work at Nasa Langely Reseach center and we have 4 or 5 functional wind tunnels here. |

| I thought you might be serious. So do you have access to the tunnels, do you know how to do the data collection and how to analize it? |

| I don't know if I can get access to them or not but if I can there will be someone to run the thing and do the data collection. I'll look into it in the next few days and get back to you all. |

Hey talking about cutting throught the air. I have been meaning to make a post on this. I have some front window ramps (trim) and side rain rails off 944 and 924S that will quite the wind noise on your older 924s. The rail rails on the new cars are flush and the upper window trim are like a ramp not a flat wedge like on the older 924s.
If anyone is interested in some let me know. I can send you a quote on the parts.
Thanks
Eric

The most abused aerodynamic aid on our cars is the front spoiler. All of mine are completely trashed and they are hard to find in good shape. I'm thinking of making a new prototype front spoiler out of some sheetmetal to improve airflow to the radiator and around the front of the car. I don't like the rear spoiler treatment on 924's but thats just my opinion. I see silly spoilers and wings on sedans and even SUV's so I just opt not to have one.

| When I am working on my car without the spoiler ...I think it is hideous. When I set the spoiler I made on the car...I think it makes the car...completes it if you will. |

This may be common knowledge amongst the bunch here but I will post it anyway. A down and dirty way to test any aero mods is to find a nice level stretch of road and do a coast down test. Bring your car up to speed, say 80mph then time how long it takes to "coast down" to, say 30mph. Do this a couple times to get a nice average. Any thing above 60mph will really give your mods a test. Of coarse this test will only tell you if you have improved your "slipperyness" or not. A well designed rear wing will improve down force without being detrimental to your areodynamics.

Well I've seen lots of cars that have better coefficient drag than the 924 such as supras. What's so good about the 924's wind tunnels if other car manufacturers match or beat the 924's coef drag? I think Porsche always combines beauty with practicality. Beauty always absorbs some of the practicality. Just cause Porsche has nice car ads it doesn't mean we should believe that Porsche is God.
It's all about the looks. Beautiful things after all are not practical.

Are you trying to say Porsche is not god? I think we need an angry mob!
On the subject of aerodynamics, has anyone had a look underneath a 951? I haven't had a chance, but I keep reading they had underbody panels to clean up the airflow, and that works in tandem with the rear diffuser. Maybe something like that should be developed for the 924.
Wouldn't be too hard, and it would gain speed and fuel economy! |
