Hey guys, I have a 1987 924s, and when i bought it, the rubber trim on the side was already off on most panels, leaving a foamy residue behind. The other night I peeled off the rest of the trim, but unfortunately was left with a dark blue/ purple mark left where the trim used to be. Has anyone encountered this problem before? In trying to scrub the marks off, i accidently took some paint with it. Can I touch up the paint over the marks? can I remove them? any help would be much appreciated!

The best result i've gotten were with GOOF OFF. You just apply it with like a rag and saturate it. you will see some of the adhesive start to dissolve, then just use a plastic or non metal scraper, or even a popsicle stick to scrape it off. add a little elbow grease and that's that.
It's been totally harmless to the paint, but i was told that it would cut through whatever coat of wax you might have on it, so re-wax it. Also rinse the car after using it. i took some pics with my phone but i don't know how to post them.

I'm using the 3M rubber pad currently. It's a big round rubber eraser that you can put in your electric drill. Spin it up and start erasing. The sticky stuff comes off great, you get alot of eraser dust on the car, smells like burning rubber, and it only takes off the residue and not the paint. My paint underneath the black stripes is just a little lighter orange so I'll have some very faint lines but they look better than the black rub stripes.

The Side Molding Kit is available for about $200. Got a set from Pelican when I had my car painted last year. The part number is 477 853 995.

Here's an idea, Mr.Clean eraser. Just crossed my mind, it's good for removing all kinds of crap off of appliances. Appliance finishes aren't all that different from auto paint. Just a thought.

Hi,

I found these worked well to remove the residue left on the car.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200-X-4-INCH-PLASTIC-PLANT-LABELS-SEEDS-STICK-/130481878834?pt=UK_Home_Garden_GardenEquipment_HandTools_SM&hash=item1e61537732

Just use plenty of washing up liquid and water, but being plastic they didnt damage the paint.

Also found this as an alternative to the side rubbers.

$5 a metre. sounds good to me.

Like to find some of this in the US. looks like it work good on my VW MK1 pickup. It has a recessed profile for molding like this. My molding has been long gone. When it's painted may be nice to have something in that groove.
