Hi guys,

I've got a 1980 924 NA already with a 5 lug conversion. Is the 944 S2 gearbox a straight swap?

My current gearbox is in a bad way, and I'll be looking to up the power shortly so thought an S2 gearbox would be a good upgrade now. I hear they are much smoother shifting.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

John

No, not at all a straight swap. The 944 setups have a larger driveshaft, which means you will need to change the torque tube. This requires lowering the torsion carrier in order to get the old one out. You would then need to either switch to a hyrdraulic clutch setup by taking those parts from the donor car as well, or find a clutch disc with a 215mm diameter with the correct (25mm/24 spline) center, which would allow you to use the cable operated clutch in your NA. It can be done, but it is NOT direct bolt on by any stretch.

and even if you do that, the car will feel slower than before as the S2 gearbox has tall gears...and the 924 one has very short gears.

Ok cheers,

I may just have the old one overhauled then. Currently it whines really really bad on the overrun, and quite badly just normally. Also I can't engage first easily, and only reverse if it runs through second and first before!

Shame the S2 box isn't a staright swap really! I'm not bothered about it being overgeared as I'm planning on an engine swap at some point.

If your planning on swapping the engine then it's not too bad a job. At least access to the firewall is easy to fit the hydraulic clutch so all that is left is dropping the rear cross beam. Cheaper than a rebuild I'd guess, although make sure that box isn't just as worn!!!
