Note the pronunciation at the 30 second mark of this official introduction of the 928S.

I usually air with "porsch-uh" because it is Dr. Porsche's name. I also like correcting people on it.....I guess in my finicky porsche-file ways I like to judge people on how they say the name.....petty, I know....

On another note about the video...very interesting Target Audience they chose...almost like it was just for show, and an S at that. I know they have to work numerous sales angles, but I always like to MotorWeek tests they do down at Roebling road to put the cars through their paces....

And on yet another note....I am currently somewhere in Africa, West Africa to be less than exact, and have seen a Panamera, a newer boxster S, multiple Cayennes (which kinda makes sense) and the cherry on top, a black 993 S (if you know anyone missing one I will go check the VIN just in case). I am on the lookout to spot and 24s or 44s although I doubt I will. But I also did not think I would almost run into a Bentley Brooklands the other day either

Cheers

Just to annoy Rasta a little more and to keep this irritating old irrelevance burning, the Pom's have always pronounced it "Porsh". Nothing new about that. Aussies do, too.

Then again, Yanks pronounce "Petrol" as "Gas" and those crazy mixed-up Germans pronounce it "Benzin"

I'll second emoore924 and go along with the bloke who gave his family name to his company

My favourite German word? "Ausgezeichnet"

My wife speaks fluent German, and my favorite words are all of them. When she talks to her cousin in Munich, it sounds like they're planning WWIII.

This is true.

However I'm thinking that Canadians would say "Porsc-eh!"

Cool film.

I though it curious he was calling it a "nine-twenty-eight-ess" rather than an "nine-two-eight-ess".

And I'm suprised to type this, but the 928 doesn't work in red. Can't put my finger on quite why; it needs to be green or blue or brown. Not red. Maybe it's the headlights.

(The 924, OTOH, works very well in red...)

Wade.

I totally agree with this!!! For some reason, the 928 does not look good to me in bright colors like red or yellow or [shudder] bright green. I think it looks really good in darker colors (brown, black, dark blue, dark green, dolomite, etc.), and also in white and gold (er, platinum metallic). One of our locals has a pearl white S4 and it is hawt!

I say "Porsh" when I'm around my friends usually. Just so I don't sound like the douche bag with a $2000 porsche that feels the need to correct people, lol.

If I meet a car guy or am at a formal event or somewhere where I would want to sound intelligent, I pronounce it "Porsh-aa"

Porsche and Neanderthal: Pronouncing German Words in English

Complete with MP3 audio file demonstration

we don't actually have a good phonetic representation of the last syllable in English. It's not "eh" and it's not "uh". It's probably best pronounced using the "schwa", or upside-down e, as in /ə/ , which is somewhere between "uh" and "eh". Unless your Canadian, in which case "eh" is pronounced like a long "a".

Meh!

Or is that Məh!

As always, it's a matter of personal choice how you say it...

Pronounce it with one syllable and have pretentious people think you're an ignorant prole.

Pronounce it with two syllables and have ignorant people think you're a pretentious toff.

Ignorant or pretentious - you choose.

On the other hand, If you are pretentious enough to pronounce Porsche with two syllables but at the same time ignorant enough to pronounce BMW as three English letters then that marks you out as a plain and simple idiot. Like Jeremy Clarkson.

It's funny how colours and shapes have to agree, especially with cars. The Veyron looks a bit meh in black, but I think it looks fabulous in white. Likewise, the Panamera looks better in white. Inversely, a BMW X6 needs to be black; it looks too pretentious in white.

But I think the best colour for the 928 is maroon.

Wade.
