So after going through and seeing what needs to be moved out of the way to drop my gas tank I must admit I am getting nervous.
Back story. The tank has been leaking ever since I bought the car. I just never really got around to taking it out and fixing it. I have gone through the 4 conversations about the process, and it looks like a daunting task. For those that have done this, Is it as bad/hard as it looks??? Do I really need to remove the half shafts at both the wheels and the transmission or can I get away with just removing them from the transmission? Do I have to remove the attachment to the gear lever in the car, will it disconnect from the transmission? Am I looking for trouble with this? _________________ Cheers;

Its not that bad. I would pull the axles to keep them safe, and service CVs if not done recently. Also a good time to renew worn linkage parts. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Well, with my car lift, and 1000# tranny lift, this is a pretty easy job. Laying on cold concrete not as much fun. I'd take the CVs off completely, they get in the way when removing tranny. Or, off the tranny side minimum, then suspend them with zip ties or something. The shift rod needs to be removed from shifter, and shoved forward as far as possible. It interferes with the tranny removal. A 13mm 'spanner' will remove the bolt holding it to the shifter mechanism on the tranny. Good time to see how much slop is in that as well. Bushings tend to 'oval' out over time. First thing to do though, is remove the bolts from tranny coupler. If they don't budge, or get stripped, you're pretty much done for the time being. When bolts are out, slide coupler back into tranny. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Its not too bad. Even laying on a concrete floor it took a weekend to take it out, replace top hoses and put back in. The hardest part honestly is getting the prop shaft cuppler un tightened and moved so that you can take the tranny out. I would highly recommend getting a ATV/Bike jack. Makes getting the tranny out and in much easier.
There is not a whole lot that you can rally mess up or break back there...unless you strip out the bolts for the half shafts...just make sure they are very clean prior to loosening them.
Good luck.

I just pulled the tank from my '80 931. Not sure why you would have to remove the half shafts, they weren't even remotely in the way. I removed the tube shaped thing from the back of the transaxle and the exhaust and it dropped out without too much trouble. Took a little bit to get it pivot down with the cross member up there, but it wasn't that bad. _________________ '80 931 |

80 931 has a G31 tranny vs 924 with Audi 4 speed, big difference in shape.
From my experience, I would suggest removing the shaft and then drop the tranny. This way you will have room to work on the tank.
Let me know if you need help _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD

Thanks for all the replies.
I guess I am going to go down the rabbit hole. I don't really have much choice to be honest. LOL. I need to fix the hole in the tank and I need to get the fuel pickup working better. I found out that under hard load in decreasing right hand corners and between a quarter and a half a tank I am getting fuel starvation. I don't like that. It slows me down on the track. Probably not this weekend though. My wife and I have booked a shopping trip to the states on Sat. So maybe in a couple of weeks. Plus I will need to clean out my garage a touch so that I have room to put everything. .
I will let everyone know when the job starts, and if I remember I will take a few pics as well. When I get involved in stuff like this I tend to go into a zen like state and work until it is done. However, when the tank is out I am going to be taking it to get it repaired so it will be out of the car for a couple of weeks I would imagine.

Makes sense. I'm most definitely still a newbie when it comes to these cars. _________________ '80 931 |
