I have a friend who drives around in a mid-80's Toyota. He has a gadget attached to it that he called a spark enhancer. It seems to be a capacitive coil device that is supposed to give a bigger spark and somehow thus ignite and burn the fuel faster or more completely.

I did look in the tech section of 924.org, and I looked at the Electromotove website, and I've looked around a bit on the web to see if anybody has anything to say about this contraption. It looks like something people put on jet skis, like this:

http://www.msdpowersports.com/Products/Watercraft/Multi-Channel-Racing-Ignition-Systems/42351---Ignition,-3-Channel-Jet-Ski/

So hey, I'll be the first to admit that I don't know what I'm talking about. Does anybody here have any knowledge and opinion about spark enhancers?

The MSD is a great system but there are different versions for different applications. I use them on my race cars along with one of their high energy coils for a spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap.
BTW when they jump to you, it more than tingles

so with the stock spark, your mixture doesn't burn completely?

Means you'll be earning your money back in no time, because the engine runs more efficient.

I don't believe it all...but I do know with EDIS my car started better and could idle at a lower rpm.... stock ignition was bad though.

One of the neat things about the multi-spark discharge MSD is that it fires the sparkplug several times at lower RPMs. That gives you a better burn. Unfortunately, it drops back to one spark (although a big one) above 3000 RPM. So start up, idle and around town running will benefit from the MSD. Spirited driving is still helped but more from the hotter spark since there aren't multiple firings at the higher RPMs.

So it looks like we've got 2 people who like it.

Care to elaborate? Like, Fifty50Plus, what version MSD and coil do you use? Do you use it on a 924 or a 944? Martijnus, what does EDIS stand for?

I have no particular problem with my ignition right now. It's just something I saw that I'm curious about. I sure hope some of you other gear heads chime in with opinions or info, 'cause I'd like to know what there is to know about it. In fact, feel free to point me to another website where I can glean more complete info if you can.

Thanks

By the way, so you know, I'm already looking through MSD's website.

http://www.msdignition.com/

Interesting product line. Mostly I'm wondering what 924 and 944 people who have used them or know a thing or two about them think about them.

Somewhere on this website is a diagram of how to wire a MSD ignition on a 924. I saved the picture to my computer so I don't know where it is on here... try search

I'm using the 6AL model on my 911 race car. It has rev limiter chips that you can plug into the box - a feature that I like.
MSD sells a tach adapter module that you also have wire in to get the 911 tachometer to work. Not sure about the 924 since I haven't gotten that far on my build.

Yes, I do believe that you need the Tach adapter.

There is a forum on the MSD website where there is some discussion of Porsches. They even answered a question from someone with a 924.

http://www.msdignition.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2950&highlight=porsche

There you have it, straight from MSD tech support.
