After recording 45 minutes of boring video at the track again saturday, looking at getting the GoPro Hero and a suction cup attachment. Then, people can watch more boring video, dust on the dash, bad shifts, listen to self-cursing, stuff like that. A local bike shop has these for 200 bucks locally, which is 99 bucks cheaper than elsewhere. I heard that there is no zoom on these, and is that a hindrance? And are these made well? Dave.

I would search for other alternatives, I have one but never uses it nowdays. Instead I use my mobile phone mounted in a suction cup device. It gives faaaar better audio. Thats the biggest problem with the Gopro, the mic sucks. Camera wise its a good camera. I also think the wide version is too wide, it gives a weird distorted view of the track. for 200 bucks go for something with better sound.

But for shooting outside of the car the gopro is great, very tough.

Thanks Cedric, I have been looking for other light-weight options. I can use our Nikon P80, takes great 10 megapixel images.Takes unlimited minutes of video till the SD card is full. Using the SD card, it slides neatly into our new laptop for downloading. However, the camera is too heavy. The dash mount I boogered up is the only place I can mount it. It still vibrates a bit, but has a decent stablization feature. Can't figure out a decent mounting point between the seats. Maybe I'll take a look at the GoPro suction cup mount and see if it would 'take' the camera I already have, and attach it the rear hatch or side window.

There are ways to improve the audio recording. Whether that is by modifying the GpPro to feed it a better input from an external mic or simply using a standalone audio recording system that you can combine with the video later.

From the little bit of research I've done, inductive mics tend to be better for recording in-car sound.

A friend of mine keeps sending me videos of his ski trips recorded on a contour HD. Excellent quality for a little camera.

Still a chunk of money just for videos to wind up your mates with how you're having a better time than they are though

BTW, check out http://www.racerender.com for a way to integrate data and video (not to mention editing the video)

I saw that site last time you posted it, very interesting. When the bike shop opens tuesday, I'll go take a look at the gopro's.

Nah, I passed. Didn't have enough money to cover it, and a few other things, even though he lowered the price to 17K with the trailer! We have a few things to build at the restaurant when we get back. I'm going to concentrate on getting the '81 back on the road and selling it. Then getting the CGT car done, and bringing that back to new mexico next fall.
