|
|
Recently i had the car sitting outside for a week or 2 while i waited on a new starter. I got the starter put it on, drained and refilled the oil and took it for a drive.. during that drive i heard a sound like a marble rattling around in the engine.. it stopped for a while but then came back as i was idling at a stoplight.. but i'm not sure about what it is.. anyone have any ideas? _________________ Black '77 924 N/A |

One possibility is a faulty injector leaning out a cylinder and causing an engine knock. _________________ 1979 924 NA race car H-Prod SCCA

stuttering indicates a lean mixture too.
So I think it's either a clogged injector like fifty50plus says, or an air leak (what's the term for that? we call it 'false air') _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

well now. I can assure you all that that marbl sound was certainly not a ping.. That was my engines way of telling me you have 10 miles left. As I cruised down 95 at 75 In the far left lane.. That marble turned into a chatter which turned into a racket followed by my engine shutting down.. By the grace of god I was able to get it across 3 lanes of traffic and onto the shoulder where I restarted it figuring it can't get any wirse than this and limped it to the nearest gas station. I write this as I'm in the tow truck on the way home.. As a warning.. If you hear a noise from ur engine.. Ccheck it out.. Or have it checked out.. So you don't end up like this guy. _________________ Black '77 924 N/A |

First sound could suggest a broken oiltube hanging over the cam.
[ Excessive oil runs down the valves at #4 // Outlet valve #4 burns // Los of power // Running on three pistons ]
The abrupt ending sounds more like
eaten piston rings at piston one.
Was there excessive smoke?
Your plugs will help you proving that;
Picture a candle stub melting…
I have experienced both,
both without (marble) noise from the engine…
Just gradual loss of throttle responce.
Good luck.

I had a very similar problem in a 258 once. A main bearing cap bolt had backed out. The shaft of the bolt was still in the hole, but the head of the bolt was rattling against the oil pan. Sounded exactly like a bad knock. Noise increased with RPMs, etc.
In a 258, if you have 5 of 7 mains intact, there's usually no problems. In a four cylinder, it might take out the rest of the mains............ |

i'd bank on the oiltube.. Oil pressure dropped to zero immediately before the engine went out.. Sounded like a hammer slamming into metal over and over whenever I let out of the clutch. I'm gonna take it apart.. Lookin for a new engine now. _________________ Black '77 924 N/A |

I'm betting on a failed oil tube or something in the top end -- cam, cam follower, valve...tho that loss of oil pressure is not a good sign.
Sorry to hear. If you get pickies, please post. If you need parts, please post. |
