I have a 1977 that has the two coil resisters. I have noticed that they get extremely warm, even to the point of being hot while the engine is running. Is this a normal situation? I know that a typical resister will heat up somewhat, but this seems a little extreme to me. The engine lost it's spark at one time, but after they cooled down the spark returned and the engine ran fine although they began heating up again. Does anyone know what the damage that could be caused if they were bypassed? Or, could I use another coil in this system that requires no resistance?

I believe you can dump the resistors and get a Bosch red coil. . .

I have a 77 and it does not have resistors. The car was like that when I bought it and it works fine, it probably has the coil Rasta is talking about because it is a Bosch.

Removing a ballast resistor will shorten the life of your coil.

. . .unless it is a hot coil designed to run on 14v.

alright, so now I have the same problem. I've got a 78 with the coil resistors. After replacing my starter, and trying to start it, the driver's side ballast resistor cooked. It literally started smoking and was really hot. Is this a symptom of something else? And, if I go to remove the resistors, can I just essentially pull it out and connect the wires?

Ryan

ps- The car will not start also. I had it running fine just a week ago. Im thinking it is not getting spark because of said ailment.

I have the same problem Im trying to start my car for the first time on the new engine. I had spark for a few seconds and then it went away. The resistor on the right hand side got really hot and there was a little smoke that came from it. Any suggestions"?

Just a thought, but maybe replace the resistors?

They should be labeled on the side as to their rating.
