|
|
How do I get the emergency brake cables disconnected from the torsion bar carrier? I found the retainer clips and removed them but the slot seems too small for the cable to slip out. The TB carrier is about on the ground but I can't find a slot for the cable to slip out of the yoke on the carrier. _________________ Mike

Got it figured out, needed another round of patience. Pull on the cables enough to get to the inner cable section. Sorry to bother all. _________________ Mike

Are you getting the carrier out?
I'm doing that for the first time at the moment and every experience is interesting
if so, did you encouter any problems? What steps did you take? Especially the problems that I'll encounter.. _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

It is out and on the ground. No real problems. There are some small metal circlips that anchor the emergency brake cable to the carrier. They can be removed with a screwdriver. Then pull the rubber cover back so that the collar will slip thru the hole and the cable exposed and it slips out. I did pull the axles to rework the CV's so that got them out of the way. I left the control arms and spindles in place. I put wood blocks on the jacks supporting the carrier and control arm so it wouldn't rotate too much on the way down. Use a pair of floor jacks.
Mine is the old carrier so it doesn't have the flying wing that anchors up to the body, so it only had 4 bolts. I've got a small Bosch impact driver and never used a ratchet for the entire disassmbly.
I have 23.5 TB's and adjustable spring plates on the way from Grenadiers and an 18mm Sway bar on the way also, so I will weld the Porsche brackets onto the carrier. I'm going to use both Rasta's computerized method and the Clarks Garage method for setting up the new torsion bars. I'm using both because the old 22mm bars may not be in the database. I'm getting Energy Suspension Super Beetle TB carrier bushings and haven't figured out what to use for control arm bushings. I'll at least repack the spindle bearings also.
I'll document the new TB setup, my current concern is that some dimensions need to be taken in an unloaded condition which I'll have to make some measuring jigs for (with the newer carrier you measure from the wing) and the spring plates are resting on the bolt bosses for the cover plate. I'll pull the TB's out a little to let them free.
The Porsche is easy all you folks are around for advice. My CNC router (woodworking)has lost the Z-axis ball screw I get random movements in the Z axis of about .001-.002 inch which should be less than 0.0005 and it is scary to get into, ie no idea who or how to repair or do I buy a new ball screw from some unknown outfit, does it have to machined to fit my unit? The machine manufacturer went out of business 15 years ago. No machine drawings etc, but I will take a lot of pictures. Closest machine repair type people 3 hours away. Ouch. Budget? It might be $200 or $1500, it won't run right without this repair, there goes the income. _________________ Mike
