|
|
Hey fellow 924 addicts, I have been removing the old sound deadener from the floorpan and discovered some neat stuff. Cracks, corrosion you name it, so ive a bit of repair to do. I suggest if your 924 was badly treated in the past you check under the goop for these probs before they get worse. Ill try to get some fotos up.Possibly worser on the drivers side as that gets all the use. Ill repair it by drilling, welding and plate over the area, with one eighth plate? sound ok to you guys?c _________________ Joe

Yeah, I've seen the same - no doubt due to consumption of "mass quantities".
The floor & the rest of the body is only 18 or 19 gauge sheet. 1/8" plate seems like too much, unless your cracking is right at the mounts (mine isn't). I'll be welding in 16 or 18 gauge when the time comes... _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

One of my 24's had this, the seat was no longer attached to the front mounts (previous owner was a large chap). well worth checking out (usually rear seat mounts crack).
Try to use 18g steel it worked on mine, no more cracks _________________ Porsche 924 na

Luckily, the 944 floorpan is essentially the same. Might worth looking at replacement panels from a scrapped 944. Otherwise, beware of the galvanized metal used in the body of the 924 and 944 when welding. _________________ Stefan

Thanks guys,
I foundinfo on Welding Processes http://www.welding-advisers.com/Joining-galvanized.html
"Otherwise most of the welding processes can be used for Joining-galvanized steels with minor adjustments taking into account that in and near the joints zinc is vaporized by welding.
Zinc melts at 420 0C (787 0F) and boils at 906 0C (1663 0F) and is therefore removed as vapor that, when oxidized, becomes fumes at steel welding temperatures.
Arc Welding
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is applied for Joining-galvanized steel much as it is for bare steel. To avoid that zinc vapor become entrapped in the molten weld puddle one should design joints with slightly wider gaps to allow for complete fume escape.
Welders should be alerted to provide sufficient heat input, to slow travel speed for degassing the molten metal and to point the electrode forward to push the zinc vapor away from the arc.
The welding electrode composition used for Joining-galvanized steel should be checked to assure that the silicon content be very low (we found some disagreement on the actual recommended level) because high silicon can cause zinc to penetrate the weld metal, leading to cracking
