cool, thanks. I'm working on redoing the entire exhaust system, and since the car is so old....the air regulations can go to hell!

As someone who has to share the planet with you, please don't.

If you replace it with a proper performance version, you'll get a little muffling and very little backpressure. This means that you don't need as much muffler on the end of the exhaust.

Grassroots Motorsports Magazine recently did an exhaust test on one of their project cars and they showed that the catalytic converters can be used and not effect performance.

For a N/A car, you want a little back pressure in the exhaust anyways. On a turbo car, the less the better.

I have a friend with a 427 CID ZR1 Corvette that dynoed at 670 HP at the rear wheels with cats and 673 HP without cats. If that doesn't show how performance cats don't really effect HP I don't know what would.

The 924 factory cat is restrictive but the after market ones are not.

Firstly, i never knew the 924 had a CAT fitted
I have never seen one.
My cars do not have CATs and do not require them by law in the UK

As for replacing the system, i replace mine (from the downpipes back) on the 84 last year. I had a hole in the back box witch is illegal here (noise pollution), My local tyre and exhaust service center quoted me cheaper that i could buy the bits to do myself. £160 Fitted. (£120 for parts, £40 labour)
As it happens, the middle box has the same part number as a later Audi box and was only £30
tail box was £90,
it took them 25 mins to fit and they made me a coffee while i waited.

Cheep fix

As for

I'll second that. If i run my 924 every day without a CAT until the day the car (or I) die, it still won't pollute the environment as much as it takes to produce of a brand new car.

So... the Green lobby can kiss my carbon footprint

Anyup, the most abundant greenhouse gas, water vapor, is in greater abundance than Carbon Dioxide, Methane and Ozone all put together, and i don't see governments pushing technology to help prevent water from evaporating. The are too busy trying to get you all to buy new cars

Slaves to the market forces i think

Yeah, ... Burn more fossil fuels and chop down more trees.

This global warming thing really needs some helping along.

The Brits and Yanks are all snowed under and it`s even bloody cold in OZ too ATM. Crap summer so far, we even had snow in Sydney the other day.

Screw the cat too (not literally please ) IMO.

with what ive been watching on the history channel its the britts that messed up the air when ya ran outa wood and started using coal.. you dont have cats we DO put the thing back on it wont hurt it and you will reduce emmisions.just use a performance converter.and just keep on thinking like that and soon there wont be nothing left.

The US Federal government has laws stating that it is in fact illegal to modify or disable the emissions controls for your vehicle and that manufacturers must make replacement parts available for 10 years (?) after production.

Now, this is mostly ignored provided that the vehicle passes the local emissions laws (whatever they may be, sorry California folks)

Just pointing out that you can stay "legal" and not lose any power in the process.

9xx Girl, not sure where the discussion of new cars came into this, we were discussing whether cats cost a vehicle power. The answer? Stock units do, performance units generally do not.

To the best of my knowledge, only North American toofahs had cat's. Happy to be proved wrong but I've personally never seen nor heard of an R.o.W. toofah with a cat...

Agree that you should keep one on but not really for any other reason than 'cause if it's illegal to run without one and, God forbid, you totaled your car or someone else's, and your insurance company find out, my guess is you're F star star star star starred!

Funny story,

I took mine off and looked straight through it. It was punched through completely!
