Posted: Tue Jan 04, 2011 1:16 pm Post subject: Replacing rear hatch struts |
|
|
| I just got done replacing the hood struts and had a heck of a time getting the hood open wide enough to snap the new struts on. I have struts to install for the rear hatch and am wondering if anyone has some advice or trick to share. I don’t want to be pushing the rear hatch as hard as I did the hood or I might be breaking the window seal or worse, breaking the window. |

Rear hatch struts are easy. They don't have to be compressed like the hood struts do.
If you were able to switch out the hood struts without breaking the windshield, then you're good to go on the rears.
Just don't let the hatch hang on one strut while you change out the other one. It could tweak the already fragile frame. _________________ Dan.

Hi, sorry to hijack, but since we are on the subject, I just have an additional question regarding struts
The struts I just got off ebay came as two different parts:
Are these supposed to be different? The seller claims "thats how they come from Porsche and thats what they are like from the factory they have one of either part number".
Is this true? I am sceptical...My old ones are identical - don't see any reason they shouldn't be...? _________________ 1980 924NA ROW |

Both the replacements and the ones on my car look just like the ones you have pictured. When ordering I saw they were on the same but checked and that is how they are on my car. |

Yes, the strut on the left of the photo fits the right hand side of the car. The end in the picture is steel and grounds to the body. The wire that connects to the black slider thing grounds the boot light when the lid is up. The other end of this strut is plastic (insulated from its ball joint and not pictured). This grounds the heated rear window via a 6mm spade and jumpre wire.
The strut on the right of the photo fits the left hand side of the car. This has plastic insulators both ends as this will be 12v pos when the heated rear windscreen is on _________________ 924 (84) N/A 2 ltr - 5 Speed - BLACK - Project (looking for 200BHP, any ideas!)

See link below. They are relatively cheap so we will have to see how long they last. They are for 944 (are these more powerful than std. 924 struts??) After I put a 944 spoiler on my 924, the extra weight was too much for my old struts.

@rkn: If you're thinking off replacing the hood struts (front),
you will find these a lot closer to home @ www.klokkerholm.com
…remembered that one since it is the only thing they got left listed
An upside down broom was helpfull to me when replacing the ones at the rear, one at a time.
And yes, like pointed out above, make sure the struts can handle the current as expected and give it some grease.
Cheerio, Harm.
