I wonder what did he meant in #3 and #23 'secrets'. Maybe it's my poor knowledge of English, maybe - poor skills in racing, but I can't understand them. _________________ WBR, Shurick

#3 = imagine there is an egg between your foot and the pedal. The goal is to press on the pedal without breaking the egg. Slamming your foot down would break it and lock up the brakes and cause the tires to slide.
So, the goal is to hold the car at the maximum brake force possible without locking the tires up by gently increasing pressure at the pedal to find that point where the maximum grip available from the tires is reached so that the brake system is now generating and trying to transfer heat as much as it can to slow the tires and the car down.
A good thing to remember is that the tires stop the car. The brakes stop the tires. An improvement or a detriment in one will effect the other.
#23 basically means to pass in such a way that you don't surprise or shock the driver being passed. Putting your nose in their mirror one or two corners before you attempt the pass will enforce your desire to pass them. _________________ Stefan

I would add to this...
#3 - to quote Randy Pobst regarding proper braking technique - "In like a lion, out like a lamb." As stated, you want to get the brake pressure up as high as necessary as quickly as possible, without overdoing it. No lazy transitions from gas to brake; if you look at a snapshot of the data (speed plotted vs. distance), there should be a sharp peak when you go from gas to brake.
THERE'S NO COASTING IN RACING.
If you're not wide-open on the gas (WOT: Wide-Open Throttle), you should be cornering at the limit or on the brakes.
Furthermore, you don't want to be slow building up to max braking effort; when you start braking is when you're going the fast, and half a second to build up braking effort is going to burn a lot more distance at, say 150kph than it will at 50kph! This is raw time wasted.
So onto the brakes quickly, without "shocking" them to lock up.
This takes a lot of practice to do well, of course.
#23: I would go beyond this to say, when you're passing - you want your body language to make it clear to the other driver that you ARE coming through - NO HESITATION. A decisive move, not a slow, tentative positioning to line up the pass.
If the other driver senses that you aren't making a definitive move, he'll be unsure what you're going to do, and either he'll slam the door, or make moves that are unpredictable to you, increasing the risk of contact.
If you drive like you own the place... you will. _________________ Vaughan Scott
