doesnt start?
does it crank, or just click?
if it cranks, its the "hot start" listed in the FAQ, low pressure in the fuel system.
If it doesnt crank, then you suffer the same problem as me. From what I have been ready, this is from old engine to chassis grounds (I now have 4 grounds, 2 on one side of the coil, 1 on the other, and 1 to the battery ground post). Mine is also possibly a gummed up starter or pokey solenoid. |

Look in the technical section and the FAQs. They nention installing a switch that turns on the electic fuel injector. It solves the no hot start problem. It worked for me......

Well if you hold it half throttle, how does it react once it starts? does it help if you keep the throttle up once it's started, or does it help if you kickly punt the peddle and let it flick back? If it helps to punt the pedal and let it come back fast, you have a too lean situation. If it helps to keep the pedlle held down now matter what, then its a too rich situation. Start from there, it's probably a too lean situation, so to get it started try playing with the peddle like a tap dance...tap it down back and forth until the car starts to run better. I find it always helps to tap the peddle, once the car is trying to stay running... holding it down makes it worse if done constantly.

As for the shifter problem, take off the boot and inspect things. Wiggle the shifter around. You can easily tell if its a bushing problem, or a simple worn out metal problem. If the stickshift wiggles around and you see movement, and putting tape aroudn the parts (to simulate a bushing ) helps...then you've found your problem. I think that you have a snailshell tranny, since your car is 79, but not sure...USUALLY the problem is always the bushings at the rear, hard to get, universal joint. In the Audi trannies, the problem is always at the EASY TO FIX location...and is a metal to metal problem.

My 82 starts hard but it starts by letting the pumps run for several seconds, cranking it and if it fires, immediately crank it again and it starts like a champ with throttle about half. Mine actually acts like the timing is too advanced because it cranks hard. So far, it has always started.
